By what Doctor Talley said to Whip in a later scene "The contents of sub were far too inaccessible" by what he meant from the scene when the squid attacked the sub presumably crushing and biting through it for we hear the metal being torn apart and crushed and pulled apart again.

Yeah the squid would have done all that damage after it dived from the camera's screen and you hear the tearing and the crushing of the metal so after probably imploding the sub it would have tore it to pieces to eat Christopher, Jameson and Ebbets hence why Talley later said to Whip all Christopher's parents could do was to collect his few things. No body to salvage not to mention a pissed off mother giant squid is not too far off.

In the book the squid kept feeling around the sub until it reached the observation port. That’s where it finally bit.
