A couple of Ruthie questions.

How long did she play football?
Her parents believed she remembered her conception and birth ?? It did get her that horse deal.
Why would her parents let her drop out of private school???
When is one of the kids going to tell her shes adopted ?

Eric and Annie let Ruthie drop out of private school because the school was prejudice against Muslims.

I think that's not what the OP meant. It is just hard to believe that parents would allow their child to ditch a prestigious school and ruin her future because of an bigoted school board.
I think a better solution would have been to let the Miss MacKeoul (the principal), Miss Riddle and Ruthie fight the school board from within instead of just leaving them behind with their bigotry.

How were they "prejudiced"? From what I remember, they said all students attending the school had to wear the uniform, and the muslims thought their child should wear their garb instead. Isn't saying all students have to follow the same rules treating all equally? Or do they just want "equal" when convenient, other times, special treatment?

reply

I don't remember the issue ever once being about what they wear.

Maybe I am mixing it up with another show.

But I remember a show where a muslim family wanted their child to attend a private school, but wanted her in their garb, not the school uniform that every student in the school was required to wear. And it was slanted to make the school look like "bigots" when they were treating every student equally.

The girl wasn't wearing hijab at that time (she later did, in an episode dealing with the Iraqi war, though) and it is implied that her family emigrated from France. She definitely would not have been allowed to wear any Muslim headgear in any French school, because French schools don't allow strong religious symbols. Small crosses or stars of David are allowed, but no large crosses (recognizable as such from one step away), yarmulkes…or Muslim headscarves. The DuPré family would have gotten used to it, if they had been living in France before, because in France, school education is compulsory. One of the three pillars of the French school system: Free of charge, compulsory, and non-religious. So, if you have a Muslim family with a school-age girl, you must choose between violating the precepts of Islam, or the law of the country, if you keep your daughter out of school.
I remember countless sessions about that dilemma when I was in college, until I was royally sick of it. It is an interesting subject for one or two reports and/or discussions, but it is not the only issue in France.

You may cross-examine.

I think you are mixing it up with another show. That was not the issue at all in this episode.

This was a post-9/11 episode (aired in early 2002). The parents and the school board were all freaking out about Muslims being terrorists and they were prejudiced against the Muslim family for that reason.

Please stop.

- I think she played football for one episode.

- I don't remember this, but would believe that Eric and Annie would fall for it.

- I agree with Rosarypliars. In one episode, they stated it was a mistake to let her run away from public school instead of facing her fears/conflict with the teacher. So now it's suddenly okay to run away again?

- None of the other kids were ever told that Ruthie was not Eric's child, and since he so often made her his favorite, they never figured it out.

reply

What episode reveals she's not erics? I don't think I ever saw that episode.

reply

None. Just responding to the OP's question and other speculation on the board over time that Ruthie didn't look like Camden stock.

reply

Didn't Ruthie get kicked out because she was defending the Muslim girl? Eric was the one who suggested the girl go to Elenor Roosevelt. The Camdens don't mind their own business. I wouldn't want to look like a dunce going back to my old school.

reply

Ruthie wasn't kicked out. She left willingly because she wasn't going to put up with the school being so prejudice.

God bless you always!!!

P.S. Mrs. McCool and Ms. Riddle quit the place too for the same reason.

reply

That was Ruthie's fault for leaving. She had her chance for a prestigious school.

reply

I don't blame her for leaving. She was right to jump ship. That school was out of line for what they were doing to that other girl.

God bless you always!!!

Bad casting like that and then no explanation always bugged me in shows. Why have one child who clearly is not both the mother and father - and have no explanation? Adopted? Result of an affair? (I can imagine the Annie self-serving speech where she explains why her affair was "justified").

Another show with bad casting and no explanation of the characters: Family Affair. I know twins do not have to look exactly alike. But the boy was whole head shorter than his "twin" sister. They looked like they were about three years apart! No explanation - illness, whatever - for why he was so small!

reply

Maybe Sgt. Michaels is Ruthie's father?

At the very beginning of she show, it looked like both Simon and Ruthie were adopted. Ruthie, because she's so swarthy, and Simon because he said that, if he died, his parents could adopt ANOTHER blond boy — instead of: "a blond boy just like me". But when Eric and Annie consider adopting George, it is revealed that all of the original five siblings are their biological children.

reply

Sgt. Michaels as Ruthie's father would have been an interesting twist. Better than doing the casting they did and then doing/saying nothing with it.
