Overly strict parents

I am watching this show for the first time on Hulu and the parents are so strict and their punishments are extreme in my opinion. I am only on the first season so the ones that stand out so far are Mary sneaks out and goes on a double date at a frat house with Camille and Eric and Annie grounded Mary for a month. I get what she did wrong but i thought a month was a bit much. Two weeks seemed fair to me. It's not just the Camdens, the Hamiltons are super strict too. The father grounds his kids for six weeks just for being at the Varsity restaurant when Mary stole the glass. The Hamilton kids didn't even do anything wrong. There were other times too and it just seems like they go overboard on the punishments on this show.
