zahrada

Hello !
I´ve seen this "masterpiece" of Martin Súlik twice, Göteborg Film Festival some years ago, and that is not enough. I want to see it at least ten times more, but how ? Anyone know if there is a VHS or DVD copy of this film. I´ve also tried to find the director but not succeded.
Hope for some help out there...

Martin Sulik is the director of this film. I'll find out for ou if it came out on the DVD or a VHS. Slovakia is "bit" behind when it comes to releasing their own stuff and even worse at presenting it to the world. Well, where there's no money...
Just let me know, if you are still interested.
Where are you from?

Hello Sister Moon4 !

Thank You for Your answer, and I´m still very interested. Have You seen the film ? It is a great film, and I was really taken by it.
I´m from Gothenburg, Sweden and now I´m looking forward to Gothenburg Film Festival that starts 23rd of January. It was on this festival I saw Zahrada (twice) a couple of years ago.
Are You from Slovakia ? Do You know anything about Martin Sulik and what he is up to nowadays ?

Best regards ..

Janne

Hello Janne

I am from Slovakia, but I've live in London. I'll contact some of my film buff friends and ask if it came out on DVD. I very much doubt it, but maybe someone would be able to get hold of it from Slovak film institute.
I've seen it many years ago as a teenager and loved it. There is another Slovak director, that you should look up if you'll have a chance. His name is Juraj Jakubisko and something I am sure you would love would be a fairy tale called Perinbaba. It has been translated into English as Lady Winter or Feather Fairy. Magical!!
They're showing his films in London this month and I just found out today and I am so excited.
Sulik has done few films since but it wasn't worth much. Slovakia hasn't got money to produce films, which is a shame.
have to go now, looking forward to your answer!

reply

Hi Erika !

Sorry for my late answer. Thank You very much for the recommendation of Perinbaba. A film recommended by one that loved Zahrada must be something. Unfortunately i haven´t had the opportunity to see it yet. But I sure will as soon it´s possible. If there is no other solution I have to go to London to see it :-)
It hurts that Sulik obviously hasn´t come up with anything that got distribution in Europe.

Hope to hear from You soon....

Hi!
I have just been looking at the dvd releases of Czech films and as my friends are coming to London before Christmas, I left a huge list of requests with them. Lots of Czech films are available on dvd, even the old ones, and they're all with English subtitles. Still nothing similar happening on the Slovak cinema field. shame.
What film impressed you the most this year? I fell in love with Jim Jarmusch. I knew him for a long time, but I just can't get enough of his films right now. My favouite one must be Down By Law with Tom Waits and the recent Coffee and Cigarettes.

If it's of any help to you, both Zàhrada and Orbis Pictus were released on VHS in the Netherlands.

For all you guys who did like this movie - try to check Vsetko co mam rad (Everything I like) by this director. Has a similar pace, I like it almost as much as Zahrada.
Well, Sistermoon is right - not enough support for good movies in Slovakia.

Vide cor meum.

I am from Malaysia and no one from where I come from knows Slovakia or where it is but I was lucky enough to be able to get hold of a good quality of the movie.

Also, I prefer Zahradá over Všetko čo mam rad, partially because my capital city, Kuala Lumpur was mentioned in the movie ;)

I think it's really hard to get movies from Slovakia/Cz unless you live there. Bontonland in Prague. You can also get stuff online and they ship to everywhere around the world.

The DVD will be released February 2008, I assume with English subtitles. The distributor is MagicBox, but I haven't found it on any e-tailers site yet.

Zahrada DVD has been released with english subtitles, there are also nice DVDrips on war forums (e.g. Warez-BB.org). It's available in different slovak/czech DVD eshops, it costs about 13€ + shipping.

I saw this movie many years ago at the Philadelphia Film Festival (1996) and it has stuck with me in my mind as I remember it was such a marvelous film. I've been wanting to get a copy of it for many years. Does anyone know if a DVD copy with English subtitles exists, yet? (I don't speak Slovak)

Let me know where I can get it...

Thanks!

reply

Yes, there is DVDrip with english subtitles available on WBB.

the gorila.sk and dvdbest.sk shops would be the best bet. I don't know, however, if they ship abroad as well, but then again there's no harm to sending a mail with that question.
Dvdbest has the site in an english version as well, Gorila doesn't.
