Makes him a hero...

My fathers uncle was a victim of the poisoner while he worked for Kodak. I think the way the poisoner was glorified here was a disgrace. Some people will do anything to make money!
I remember at the time that his surviving wife was very upset at the film. A film about the facts would have been much more appropriate. No respect given by the film makers.

i dont know about the real case of this, but i am sympathetic to you because
when i saw this movie i felt sick to the stomach. i knew this was a true story
and didnt enjoy this. knowing that this really happened it shocked me, felt
very sympathetic to the families of his victims. because i dont know the whole
facts of this case, i only know what happened in the movie but if you say its
not true to the real thing i believe you. you said your fathers uncle was a
victim im sorry to hear that all i can say is im very sympathetic. lucky the
poisoner is now dead in hell.

this film was black comedy. it was funny, and tragic at the same time. great movie if you ask me.

reply

what is most sickening about this movie is that it's a true story! how unbelievable to know that a young boy could become such a murderer! total tragic...yet the movie is such a black comedy...a 'pitch black' comedy. however, although this movie makes me sick, it makes us reflect on the importance of support from family and friends...

reply

It's not a true story, it's loosely based off of someone who did similar things. Get your facts straight.

I can appreciate that you have negative feelings for the actual poisoner, but this movie hardly makes a hero out of him. It's a very good dramatization about an unfortunate chain of events that doesn't seek to lionize or demonize the main character.

If you think I'm being sympathetic here, consider that if it were up to me, I'd slowly poison the little creep to death as punishment.

It's quite scary how many people here invent punishments and revenges. I don't say people should not be responsible and have to pay the bills for what they've done, but exactly watching this movie should make us think more about it. He was getting rid of people who did him something wrong (or in his sick mind he thought so), and - being a psychopate - he found his acting normal and desirable. So, by finding the way how to get rid of such a person, aren't we doing the same? Oh, no! He was young, and did it by his impulses. What people say here is much worse, because they first think, plan what they'll write, as they would plan carefully their acting if a chance to do it in real life occured, so it's a real presentation of their minds, characters, and presentation of the culture and civilisation they belong to. And if they are really representative for it, we are just about to enter Middle Ages again.

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. BUT! It is in no way accurate to the real case. They left out plenty.... like the fact that he was a hardcore neo-nazi. I think this movie is great but it is NOT a biography. After reading the life story of Graham Young, it seems this movie is based on a true story in the same way Texas Chainsaw Massacre is based on a true story. This in mind, I don't think anyone should be offended by it. It's a great black comedy. That's all. Lighten up.

reply

Lighten up? I think you missed the point I was trying to make as a family member of one of the victims. Did you read up that high in the postings or was that too much effort? ;-)

reply

I understand your being upset, without a doubt. People make movies like this one to try and tell a story-but keep it light with the dark humor-but death is death and losing someone cannot be healed by this-hell it can add salt to the wounds.

If it provides some comfort, the movie did take massive liberties to make him be a sitcom unto himself and I think what they were trying to do was make him out to be a fool-someone not worthy of the respect he was hoping to obtain by his actions. They portray the character as a parody, a joke. Believe me, this guy would be hurt more by how he was portrayed than anything else. His pride was slaughtered in this film. He died in 1990, so think about it this way: his name was made known by this movie, and he wanted to be remembered for him being clever and intelligent-now he'll be remembered as a laughing stock.

Again, sorry to hear of your loss.

Chill out! Not like anyone die... ummm...

I remember that while this was an interesting movie; I was shocked at the callousness of the killer. I like the idea of daily caning people like this because I am opposed to the death penalty. Torture lasts longer and is a greater deterrent. So sorry for your loss. Hope they get that prison without air conditioning up and running in Death Valley.

Fortunately, malicious mayhem is a one way trip to the needle in this country. I am so sorry for your loss.

They picked someone who was nice to play him, if he had looked terrible no doubt people's opinions would be different.

I don't see how anyone can watch that film and think that Graham Young was depicted as a hero. He murdered three people and made many others very ill and he was never shown as feeling true remorse for it. How is that heroic?

reply

I found it a bit difficult to watch, knowing it was based on real events, and having read up about what happened, well I couldn't be very sympathetic to the character because he was a nasty piece of work.
As a fictional story, it'd be rather interesting, but they used mostly the same names, same murders, and so although it neglected many facts it's very much in bad taste to make entertainment out of it.
I'm not usually one to get all moral about films, but it romanticised his murdering by making out all he wanted was a diamond and that it was all just a science project.

reply

I never felt it that way. Comparing to all those glorified American vigilantes, this one looks as a true evil and danger to the society, and I can see nothing in the movie that would excuse him for what he did.

reply

"it romanticised his murdering by making out all he wanted was a diamond and that it was all just a science project"

Why would anyone think that murdering people to learn how to make diamonds is any better than for any other reason? If the real life Graham Young had murdered people and through doing that found a way to make diamonds would that have made him a hero? Of course not. He was a cold-blooded murderer whatever the motive and thats not romantic or heroic.
