Finding Xiu Xiu

I saw this movie a long long time ago, well probably around 2000 or so, and surprisingly it was on HBO (or something like that) REALLY late at night (we had digital cable back in the day) I remember watching this movie in the dark while everyone else in my house was asleep...this movie made me cry so hard!(the only movie to make me cry since I was a little kid)
I have always remembered this movie because it shook me to my core (usually films don't do this to me, BOOKS do, but NOT films), but I could never remember the name of it (well I was unsure of the name anyway) and I have never seen it since, but the vibrancy of the imagery from it still resonates in my mind today. I think I cried because it really made me feel the loneliness Xiu Xiu feels, and the way she thinks her body will find her redemption from her fate...so many men abuse her, and she abuses herself in this way, but it doesn't matter because she feels nothing inside because everything she ever cared for has been taken away. I also empathized with the character Lao Jin. He stands by and witnesses someone that he loves destroy themselves. He is helpless, he wishes he could save her, but nobody can....in the end, what other path is there to take but the one she takes? No hope was left in her....I guess Lao Jin does help her in the end, in a way.....anyway I just found this movie again and I had to share the impact the late night romp with this movie had on me. Now I'm going to try to get a copy of it and watch it again, seven years later!

I think that's the same way I saw it. On HBO, late at night. I was probably 12 years old and unable to comprehend the plot as well as I can now, but there was something about this movie that made me have to watch it until the end. Lol I think I was really tripped out by the time it ended. Anyway I need to watch it again.

I saw it when I was 13 on the Independent Film Channel late at night too. I really loved it. Can't wait to see it again!

Had to go to a museum to see it for film class. Surprisingly enjoyed it quite a bit, a moving film.
