'Perfect' Ending But... (Semi-SPOILERS)
Indeed the ending was heart-wrenching: but come to think of it this was Director Joan Chen's only way of making an impact of the film for her audience. Let's say Lao Jin shot Xiu Xiu on the foot and the officials would have send her back home (limping). She would have probably led a miserable life back in her Chengdong hometown with her toeless condition and her memories of being abused by men. This ending would have made the film just mediocre (like any typical hollywood drama). Or let's say she just stayed with Lao Jin for the rest of her life and live happily (or miserably) ever after. This kind of ending is like a fairy tale, it's not plausible. The film would have failed. Thus even though the conclusion of the movie was sad and heart-wrenching; there couldn't be any other ending than what was portrayed in the last segment of the film. A perfect ending; but sad. By the way the actress that portrayed Xiu Xiu goes by a lot of names: Lu Lu, Xiaolu Li, Li Xiao Lu, and Jacqueline Li.
