The 'Third World' (spoilers)

"I'm finally crossing over into the third world where I've always known I belonged."

One of the last lines in the movie, Alex in voiceover.

It was sort of puzzling to me and I'm wondering if anyone has any thoughts on it. I guess on one level she could literally mean the "third world" in the common sense, although neither Mexico or China are actually third world nations.

A third world outside heterosexuality? Makes sense, though using lesbianism symbolically as an ideal that solves the messy power relations of heterosexuality seems overly simplistic. A third world outside capitalism? Could be. Although I believe she says she and Virginia plan to start a business in Shanghai with some of Bruno's money, it would be a departure from the way they made money before, as prostitutes or pawns in the sadistic relationships of powerful men.

I don't think Wild Side is as accomplished thematically or cinematically as White of the Eye but it does bring up some interesting ideas and strike a unique tone. The ending (and really the whole movie) was campy but satisfying.

They were in Mexico, and going to make their way to China, where Alex had sent Virginia's $375,000 back to before she left her job. Their plan was to start up the factory again and run the business with that money, which was , Alex puts it, "rightfully Virginia's money". So I do not think that money was Bruno's at all.

There were multiple references in the movie to crossing over, and flying. I am guessing there was some symbolic reference here, but I sure didn't get it.
