Cubs in a cooler?

Uh, did I see that correctly? Were the wolf cubs in the cooler? Then, after the canoe accident, they panic about the cubs and open the cooler to make sure they're OK - then, close the lid on them again. How in the world are they getting any air?

The movie was decent overall, no great shakes, but this scene made me scratch my head. Am I missing something?
