Good performance by John Travolta, but why the accent?

The accent he adopted was crap. No other word for it. Why would whites speak in an African American jive patois? Surely whites would have an accent influenced by their ethnic background? You hear shades of Irish in some Irish Americans, and you can hear the French influence in Louisiana. Pinnock's accent would've been better if it reflected his ethnic background, say Anglo Saxon, Celtic or Italian.

Opinions?

I agree. I thought the accent was unnecessary.

I didn't see the movie but why wouldn't they?

The way "black" people typically sound doesn't come from their "ethnic background" like some kind of african (Not to my knowledge anyway - maybe I'm wrong. But I don't think I'm far off), which must be what you mean since you stupidly equate that with "whites" who sound like their "anglo-saxon, celts and italians" so as you say why don't they talk like that? - well their was a role reversal numb nuts. The way they black people talk is influenced by an old english, southern style and/or being isolated from "whites" and others, which led to an evolution of what you hear today.

Where the heck do you think all the "this be" and "that be" and stuff comes from??? It's not cause they are stupid - IT'S OLD ENGLISH! and the accent comes from that, too.

So if there is a role reversal then the "whites" in this movie would have developed a similar way. I have heard "whites" sound like typical "blacks" and it is real and not faked, because of where they are raised. Often, you wouldn't be able to tell the damn difference if you had your eyes closed.

I don't know if what I said is applicable since I don't know how the "whites" in this movie got to be in their situation, but your assessment of how black people sound to argue that the whites shouldn't is ignorant.

...............True, during the slavery era West Africans, who were abducted and brought to America to work on plantations were forced to completely brake with their culture including their language. They learned English from their largely Scotch or Scotch Irish masters. Long after the end of slavery and the mass migration to the industrial north many African Americans still speak a variation of a southern dialect. their are, of course, influences from other cultures and new words, but the old southern English; short sentences, abrupt descriptive terms. Since abrupt terms convey more power, "the government's ripping us off" is always strong the "I object to excessive taxation by our elected officials, some elements of "black English" have become popular with the total culture. Ebonics supporters not withstanding it's still a variant of old English or Scottish..................Another example would be Jamaicans or West Indians who speak English, as spoken in Great Britain, because British rule, including the educational system, didn't end till well after World War Two..................I missed the start of this movie so I'm not certain if the ancestors of Travolta's character were abducted by blacks to work as slaves in an alternate African dominated America or if, as was the case of most Europeans in real life, decided to immigrate to America even if it meant second class citizenship. After All the Irish choose to immigrate to America to escape the Potato famine if though the Irish as well Catholics were subject to discrimination; it was better then starving to death.............If The whites had been slaves their black master's, in this reverse reality, would have forced the language on them. The white population would be speaking a variant of a dominate West African dialect. Of course the movie is in English. Even if the screen writer had thought about it the reality is Americans will not watch a movie with subtitles even though it has never stopped me...............If the main character was a descendant of immigrants who choose to come to America voluntarily he would be speaking a regional variation of the dominant language; English, West African or Martian for that matter. Once immigrants learn English, or any other language, they most often talk like those around them and pass it on to their children and grandchildren.
True genius is a beautiful thing, but ignorance is ugly to the bone.

The weird part about it was that Travolta had that accent but no other white people in the movie did. That made it seem even more out of place. In Travolta's case, it would have made sense for him to just sound like himself, because he's one of those actors that I can't take seriously if he's doing an accent he doesn't actually have.

The accent didn't really bother me. Still a good performance.

It's a ghetto accent that many African American people need to shed. European African people do not talk with that jive b.s. accent. (Its is definitely not patois which is a beautiful accent). They speak like Brits, or Irish people, etc.
