Why was she leaving her job?

In the end it seems she was leaving her job. Why? Where was she going?

reply

That's what I always wondered, too. Anyone know?

reply

I always wondered the same thing too. If she was leaving her job, then why?

The only answer I have ever thought of was cause she was marrying Peter, but I always thought that was silly. IDK. Maybe she thought he would rather have an unemployed wife then one with her job?

I just rewatched it and it still makes no sense. She is at the hospital at the wedding and calling it off because it was a fraud. But she declared her love to Jack. She said she was in love with the other son. But at the end of the wedding she just leaves. Then she is consoling Joe Jr. and it seemingly the next day goes right to her at the station where the girl says, "Your last day huh?", "yep". And then Jack and family arrive and he proposes to her in front of them all.

I thought it was kind of weird to be honest. I thought it could have been a bit more romantic, it was kind of cheesy really. Plus they really only knew each other from a few conversations together. They didn't even date at all.

I still like the whole vibe of the movie but I thought the ending could have been a little better.

reply

That's right, she's working there again still when he proposes. I never thought of that. It's weird and just doesn't make sense.

So I was thinking on it, I'm just guessing since there wasn't much context she was just embarrassed and wanted to just move on so she was going to take a job elsewhere or travel. Because if the guy was riding this train she would have to see him every day again forever. Pretty humiliating I would think. Which I guess helps with the weirdness of the whole family showing up to the proposal. Their way of saying, we don't care about the other stuff, we love you, Marry Jack, will ya?!

So...I guess it could work. :)

That could work.

Yes, I think you have it right. That was my sense, too - that she was going to make some sort of change in her life, though it was not made clear what that would be. Kind of like how Jack finally told his dad in an earlier scene that he didn't want to inherit the family business.

reply

you forget that this was AFTER she had broken off the engagement/wedding with peter AT the wedding. and at the same time she professed her love for jack.

I was thinking that she was going on vacation to Florence.

and maybe leaving because she couldn't bear the thought of seeing peter as he rides the subway.

Lucy and Jack have a conversation just before Peter wakes up where he points out that it would disappoint her father that she works every day at a job she doesn't like instead of traveling the world as they had always planned to do and dreamed of.
She's going to travel (probably with Jack).

reply

Exactly what "borninthewrongcentury" said. She is just ready for a change in her life. She doesn't particularly want the awkwardness of seeing Peter every day at the station, and she knows that she needs to move forward--possibly to go back to school or travel, as suggested by other posters. Long story short, she isn't happy where she is and she wants something new and better.

reply

I'd be willing to accept that but then why is she still working there or at least working there again at the end when Jack proposes? She quit to travel or go back to school (or both) and then just went back to work there? Why would she do that? Unless you think we're supposed to assume that took place sometime between when she quit and her last day?

Well, when you quit a job it is in good taste to give at least two weeks notice. So, after she didn't marry Peter and had a few days to think a little on what she wanted to do, she turned in her two weeks notice. Flash forward a few weeks, it's her last day, and she is ready to move on with her life.

Is it a little convenient that Jack catches her on the very last day? Of course. But it's a romantic comedy, there is bound to be some of that. Nevertheless, the logic of the situation is sound (other than the obvious fact that Lucy and Jack really don't know each other very well--but again, it's a rom com, and this exact thing happens in countless love stories throughout history).

Ok. I guess that makes sense. That's very true about rom coms.

Jack could have very well found out from Lucy's boss when her last day was. But really, it doesn't matter. I love that scene -- when the diamond ring clatters into the token slot!

I wonder if her boss had something to do with it. he might have called the family to give them a heads-up on the fact that she was resigning/going away for a while. he WAS there at the wedding and he WAS there to hear/witness how much she and jack got along.

Maybe she just wanted a brand new start? But yeah, I loved that scene... It was perfect!

reply

She's going on vacation guys, not quitting her job.

In the scene where she hands her boss her wedding invitation to Peter, and she's all frustrated because Jack didn't want her, she says that she wishes the wedding were today because "tomorrow I would be on my honeymoon, and I'd have a stamp in my passport, and it would say Italy on it." So, since the wedding was called off (by her), she's now on leave for a while, probably going to sit at home and share Oreo cookies with her cat.

reply

No, I definitely think she's leaving her job, not just a vacation. She was going on honeymoon but since that isn't happening any longer and she figures her life isn't how she dreamed it would be, she is taking a risk and making a change. Probably going travelling around the world for a bit and then who knows. I think the big 'life ennui' was implied.

reply

Most likely she either found another job or she was transferring to a different CTA station, so she wouldn't have to see Peter again. I think it highly unlikely that she decided to travel. On a token-collector's pay, she'd be lucky to afford a trip to East Chicago, Indiana.

reply

So true. There's no way on that salary that she was going to be doing any serious traveling.

reply

She's definitely leaving her job- her friend asks her to stay in touch etc.

I think meeting jack and the whole crazy duration of pretending to be the fiancée of a guy in scams made her realise she REALLY needed to do something with her life, so she handed in her notice. She also realised how disappointed her dad would be.
I imagine she planned to travel and then study.

Hopefully getting married to jack wouldn't stop her realising her potential. I imagine he'd encourage her.
In a way it's s shame she had to wait for a man to 'take' her to Florence- but it is a romcom and they were a nice couple, v sweet.

reply

In a coma! Not scam!!!

reply

I agree that it was definitely her last day. Even though she was friendly with her boss and co-workers, she obviously wasn't happy working there. Didn't she say at one point that she was stuck there like a beetle? Plus she didn't want to see Peter and be reminded of the mess.

I imagine that she was moving on to a new job or maybe even going back college. The situation with the Callahans probably woke her up to do what she really wanted to do instead of what was expected to do.

-"Moo with me"

reply

She said she was stuck there like a "veal," aka a calf that is raised in a small pen for its meat.

Anyway, I just watched this again last night and paid more attention to what Lucy and Celeste said to each other in that last scene. Now I really think, although it wasn't stated, that Lucy could have just been transferring to another station. Face it, she wouldn't want to see Peter every day, and she didn't have enough money to travel or go back to school.

reply

I never assumed Lucy was going on vacation or transferring to a new station. Celeste's comment points to her quitting and perhaps moving. I think we are to believe that Lucy took Jack's words to heart, that her dad wouldn't be happy with what she's settled for in her life. At this point, she has no money for school or vacations (her dad's long-term illness zapped her resources), but I'd say her plan was to find a different job, perhaps one with better chances for a promotion or just higher pay in general, so that eventually she would have money for school and vacations.

She just needed a change in her life, and just as Jack took her word and spoke to his dad, she took Jack's word and decided to make a change.

I'm gonna assume that as Jack started his furniture business, Lucy went back to school, took some business courses, and built a new business together with Jack. Those two seem like they'd make a good team. 
