Does anyone know why this was originally rated NC-17, or what was cut to give it an R rating?

It had the message that being gay is acceptable. This is considered dangerous to tell to children.
Most of the cuts are to do with the sex scenes though there's one line where Camille asks Petra if she is flirting with her and Petra asks "Do you want me to?". This is immediately followed by the moonlight/"head thrown back" line.
