Why did

The parents hate Dawn so much? I mean come on that's just so unfair! When someone pushed her into the pool they laughed. Her mom gave everyone a chocolate cake except for Dawn. They both loved the older brother and the younger child. They didn't even care that she was being bullied in school and had no friends. Or someone threatened to rape her. They didn't even noticed that she even saved her little sister from being kidnapped! Was it because she was ugly or something? Were they dysfunctional?

when did they push her into the pool? I don't remember that part at all. But the point of the whole movie was that she was disliked or hated, even by her mom, and that she had bad luck the whole time. It is totally unfair and no one should live such a way. Being, "ugly" and quiet does not give anyone the right to ignore or bully her. There were some seriously messed up characters in this film.

Dawn was pushed into the pool (a kiddie pool) during the anniversary party. It was on the video and Missy was the one who did it.

reply

I don't think that they actively hated Dawn, they just were completely unaware of her (except when she's not being a perfect daughter/sister.)
It wasn't exactly a deep pool, it was a kiddy one, so I'm guessîng they were only enjoying it in the same way as those (awful) pranky home videos you see as filler on TV. And also, Dawn often expressed her frustrations as aggression, which pissed her parents off as well.

It unfortunately is not an innacurate portrayal of parents.

reply

It is absolutely an accurate portrayal...at least of my childhood. I'm glad you had such a picture-perfect childhood and parents that anything other than that perfection simply cannot exist in your mind and you feel confident enough to issue a blanket "not accurate" to the depiction of so-called "middle child syndrome".

reply

I had the same - it's extremely accurate. Especially for me - when I see the part where Brandon is threatening to rape Dawn and she doesn't even bother to tell her parents, it's like the thought of them helping her doesn't even come into her mind. That same thing happened to me, and I didn't tell my parents because I didn't think they'd care or even want to know. The thought of telling them would have been a shock to me.

Haha way to sound like an a** hole.
"It unfortunately is not an innaccurate portrayal of parents."

Jeez.

this happens, a lot okay. Is called The Real world.

People forget that parents are just people, people with flaws, arrogance, people that are vain. selfish, etc.

Dawn was obviously an outcast, she was not sociable, she didn't dance around like her sister, she didn't smile all the time, she wasn't the smartest. Compared to her brother and sister Dawn didn't really have anything special.
Also Dawn was a little moody and misunderstood. My guess is that Dawn's mom was probably the popular kid when she was little. Just like her little sister would be.
Dawn really did not fit in with her family. and her parents could feel this.
I got the feeling the mom was disappointed she didn't get 2 nice popular outgoing daughters.

right....

reply

didn't smile all the time. thinking, I never saw her smile once in this film.
