The Ending = Great!
Did anyone else love the ending to this film. No happy ending, it just shows her on the bus going to Disney World, even though she does not want to go, it was sad, but a good ending.

sharelol--yeah....i remember first watching it, and wondering if there'd be more....but it was a good ending....
--stay gold....
i was quite dissapointent with the ending as i was expecting it to be happy but instead all her problems are still there
shareI always thought it was a happy ending of sorts. Yeah, nothing changed, but focusing on her voice over the chorus of people on the bus seemed to signify that she would survive and rise above everything...but then she goes and kills herself...*Sigh* a pity.

Brenden Sexton Jr. was great in that movie.
shareWhat are you talking about, "Alixmage"? Dawn doesn't kill herself.
shareshe does in the beginning of "Palindrones", which is kind of a sequal of "welcome to the Dollhouse", but not really. You should definitly check it out.
shareI don't get it, is it a sequel or not?
Is it like how "American Psycho" is to "The Rules of Attraction"?
((FYI, Patrick Bateman is the lead in the first, and his little brother Sean is in the 2nd, but they are neither in each others films (only by name), only in both the novels do they have full chapters together.))
so does Dawn live in the same neighborhood, and so these character's bring up they she is a victim of teenage suicide. *Don't do it!* <~~~ bad "Heathers" joke
That's one of my favorites, Heathers... my middle name is Heather, so my mom bought it for me because Roger Ebert loved it.
If you are Anti-American: Admit you are doing it just to be cool. Does it feel good to hate?
God, I love "Heathers".
"Palindromes" is not a sequel to "Welcome to the Dollhouse". It is pretty much like the Brett Easton Ellis universe you brought up. Aviva, the main character from "Palindromes" is Dawn's cousin and is at Dawn's funeral in the opening credits. Also, Dawn's brother Mark comes back and has a really killer monologue at the end of the movie.

I liked it too. I like how it showed her on a crowded bus but still very isolated just the same. Well, I didn't like like it, it was sad but she was as alone in the end as in the beginning.

WHAT???
Are you serious?
WHAT??? Are you serious? - It's true, the beginning of Palindromes opens on Dawns funeral. Her cousin said she heard from Missy Dawn was pregnant from a date rape and thats why she killed herself.
911 Operator: The body's cold?
Buffy: No, my mom! Sh-should I make her warm?
- The Body
i loved the ending. so much sadness. the future still looks bleak.... it is pretty obvious to me that solondz "likes" torturing his characters (while refusing to portray them as victims). a bit like lars von trier. so, the happy ending is pretty much the last thing i would expect from him....

I wasn't happy with the ending, but I can see how it had to end like that. Although if in Palindromes (which I haven't seen) she kills herself, then the ending of this movie was kind of pointless. It made it look like she would battle on, so what's the point if she ends up dead anyway? eesh =\
sharepeople just automatically want to believe at the end of a movie like that, especially if identifying with dawn, that afterwards everything might turn out ok for her someday but sorry, she becomes obese and knocked up and kills herself so as not to bring another dawn into the world, also missy is still the devil and ruins her older brothers life by accusing him of being a pedophile
shareI liked the ending a lot, especially since it seemed to fit what Mark was saying perfectly- 8th grade is kind of better than 7th grade, but it still sucks, 9th grade is kind of better than 8th grade, but it still sucks, etc. Your problems aren't resolved all at once just based on anything, even time, like the end of a movie. You just keep going and tolerate it. Dawn on the bus was just putting up with more dumb crap she didn't want to, maybe not happily or sadly, but she was going through the motions and surviving it well enough, and that's all you can really hope to do.
It's actually pretty disappointing to me that Dawn's story was wrapped up at all. This movie seems so much better as a composite for every frustrated middle school kid than an investigation of a particular person. Just my opinion though.
to light a candle is to cast a shadow
not so good,but realistic.
shareWas so sad, but so perfect. It stays with me. One of the few endings that I will ever remember.

Real happy endings are rare.
