Disturbing no doubt because everyone has felt like an outcast at some point and can relate the main character. The film is so well directed that you are forced to live in her world for a period of time and feel the pain of a junior high school girls with no hope of being accepted by anyone. Her mother, her teacher, her siblings, the bulleys at school...all downright ruthless. And what drives it home is that it feels so real. And things get progressively worse as the film goes on. Ultimately there is no sign of relief in site. You can just feel the misery. Unlike stories about Hell, cats getting killed, or other unsettling images, this type of film feels really real despite how exaggerated the characters are. You feel like it's really happening and there is no way out. At the same time, the realism gives it humor, because we've all known people like the characters in this film. They're so real it's disturbing and yet we can not help but watch and laugh at them as we see their lives unfold.
