For the love of god. WHAT IS SO DISTURBING ABOUT THIS MOVIE?

I've seen it multiple times.... I don't know what everyone is crying about.

reply

Dude seriously.. It has a 12 year old girl being tormented really badly by her peers and being treated like crap by her family first of all. Now most people can get by that, but come on. There's a 13 year old boy who can't express his feelings for her any other way than threatening to RAPE her at a specific time after school, and instead of being scared for her life, she eventually dives in like it'll be happy or something! It has the same girl making a shrine trying to induce an 18 year old man to have sex with her and kidnap her away from her family. Out of jealousy, she purposefully causes her sister to be lost at dance practice which leads to her kidnapping, AND that very twisted occurrence just happens to be the only thing that saves her when she almost decides to tag along on a 100% guaranteed runaway death journey with the teenage rapist from before.

This movie has so many disturbing parts.

Hey Jin! You better not be cheating on me!!

reply

yeah, it's not like a torture film, but it disturbed me.
If I found out that some kid claimed that he was going to rape my daughter. I would tase him until he crapped his pants. And then I would still force my daughter to report him. Somebody needs to shove a giant dildo up his ass.

If you are Anti-American: Admit you are doing it just to be cool. Does it feel good to hate?

That is a milder version of what I'd do.

Good reply.

The OP is just a tool trying to be provocative.

reply

how is he being provocative by just asking a question?...i didn't think it was disturbing either...i thought it was just a good slice of life type movie...

reply

Exactly. These type of things happen in real life. The movie wasn't made just because.

It's not disturbing in a "AHHH, MY EYES!!" way.

Dawn: Brendan.. are you going still going to rape?

Brendan: What time is it?

Dawn: I don't know.. I guess I don't have to be home yet..

Brendan: Nah.. there's not enough time..

reply

A proof that Brandon didn't really mean what he said (that he's going to rape her), and a proof that Dawn is not "scared" but just "nervous" as she's also curious about sex.

reply

Yeah, it wasn't an easy ride, but I hardly think it was as disturbing as our own childhood.

Well, I think the thing is that if you were like Dawn in junior high and not popular, you can relate to the hell she goes through. I fortunately didn't look like her but I can see how when I was in 7th grade I would pick on one kid due to him looking like a nerd and wearing the same pants every day to school.

reply

Disturbing is not the right word, its just flat out sad!.... The only thing that I found disturbing was the songs Steve ROgers was singing " I got a blow up doll and she looks like you little girl" ???? really? you sick *beep*!

Why fo' i cant sit up here n look at you ass?
N wonda what choo got up yo sleeve?

This movie was very depressing, and I was repulsed by the way the Brandon kid was not dealt with. Too much homophobia and maltreatment of women, shown as if it's just an accepted part of the world. IMDB recommended this movie to me having seen Ghost World, so never again will I listen to their suggestions.

"shown as if it's just an accepted part of the world"

You must be new.

reply

Oh, I am sure that Brandon was dealt with. Sure, we didn't see it outright, but I am about 99% sure Brandon had a way rougher time than even Dawn. I am sure his scary father probably beat the crap out of him on a regular basis, and had been doing so for a very long time.

I'm with you Frunkis. This movie is funny as all hell. And I was weinerdog in junior high!

reply

"People have to pick everything apart..."

That's the point of discussion and critique.

reply

In a lot of old rock songs they refer to grown women as 'little girl'. But yeah it was sad. I can relate to being nerdy and awkward, but definitely didn't experience most of what she did. I was a sensitive kid, I think if I were her I would definitely have run away or something.

reply

thats what I'm thinking.. I was waiting ages for something bad to happen...

I know the bullying and stuff was bad and touched me but everyone made it out to be disturbing and I just didn't feel that it was at all..

it just felt like a comedy nothing TERRIBLE or DISTURBING actually happened, was expecting much worse, like her to turn into a prostitute in new york or something haha.

also, swan lake music didn't fit the scene at the table at all, i ADORE swan lake, but it was very distracting in that scene.

Happiness was a lot worse then this :/

reply

I thought the swan lake music at the table was one of the best scenes, and yeah I find this movie kinda disturbing, but mostly sad, and well it's a very real movie in my opinion. I don't think that anything really messed-up or tragic has to happen for it to be a good convincing and kinda depressing story.

reply

I think the most disturbing part to me about this film is the ending. This kind of crap is never going to end for Dawn and she just accepts it and sings the humming bird song. I watched this with a friend and he yelled "Is that it? It doesn't get any better for her?" He was very upset because he felt there was no resolution to her issues and she was just destined to be the Weinerdog forever.

reply

It's not that it's really disturbing as in OMG!!!, but rather it's so bleak. Coming out of it, you almost wonder how Dawn goes on living.
