Was Kevin Costner miscast in the lead role

It's been debated whether or not Waterworld was the beginning of the end for Kevin Costner as an A-list leading man/box office star. What may have in part "did him in" so to speak was that post-Dances With Wolves, he made too many bloated and pompous "epic" movies like Wyatt Earp, Waterworld, and The Postman.

In Waterworld, it seemed like Costner as trying to play "against type" or beyond his usual role (a likable, almost Gregory Peck-type everyman/hunk) by playing a borderline villain/anti-hero. But Costner just doesn't have enough of a swagger or natural charisma to pull it off (he still seems awfully bland). Here, it seems like he's trying to hard.

I don't think he was miscast at all, he nailed the role in my opinion and I don't share your view regarding lack of charisma etc.
Also, how are Wyatt Earp and Waterworld "epics"?
And in what way bloated?
I think you see things that aren't there...

Postman fits the description, though.

I agree he wasn't miscast. I thought he did quite a good job here. In fact, I think that Costner is always very watchable and he's continuing to kick ass even into his later years.

I would probably consider Waterworld an epic though, especially if you consider that there's a three-hour version of the film. It builds a fictional world from the ground up, complete with unique cultures and languages. I don't mind the "epic" label being used here.

Because he is a great example of the phenomenon known as "Oscars ruined my career". After winning two Oscars he obviously started to be full of himself and his ego was the thing that controled him.

Waterworld and The Postman are among the first pieces of shit I've ever seen. They were both way too long, without any substance, filled with totally irrelevant plot lines, were totally confusing when it came to find out what really they wanted to tell (The Postman had too many useless dialogues and in the end I stopped to oven bother about the purpose of everything that was going on), in both cases the acting was simply painful to watch (especially Coastner who simply looked like an arrogant asshole), the dialogues were generally ridiculous, the pacings felt disorganized, etc.

I could also talk about Coastner's directing in The Postman which looked like he didn't even care about what was going on. It was like if he knew that he was making a total piece of garbage and therefore, didn't bother to even try making something decent out of it. Maybe he thought that he was the new Martin Scorsese who could make gold out of any material he works with (not all Scorsese's movies are masterpieces but even his weakest movies are at least decent).

I think Coastner is just like Nicholas Cage or Cuba Gooding Jr. Winning an Oscar so easily certainly made them think too much of themselves. What other performance would you even consider in Nic Cage's career after Leaving Las Vegas? I didn't see everything he has done but from what I saw, his movies were abysmally awful.

He's a mutant! I mean for 200M they couldn't come up with a better script?!
