most underrated movie EVER

it's a shame this movie didn't got an oscar, and instead was nominated for the razzie award.

I love this movie, big fan of the Mad Max vision and this nailed it. It's great fun, maybe not Oscar worthy but one of my favourite 'fun' movies and a worthy blu-ray.

One of my childhood favorites.

I'm a huge fan of Waterworld, I've always loved it despite all the haters. I've always just loved post-apocalyptic films and this one definitely had a unique spin on the genre. I wish they made more of the world with sequels and what not. The world they live in is so interesting. I would like to see who else is out there in the world and how they are living.

Yeah m etoo. Love it. When I saw it first on the cinema, being 12 in 1996, it was a big movie. Never heard anythign bad about it back then, before years later I read horrible things about it here. Don't get it. I liked it so much, and still think it's a personal classic.

I think a few parts were cheesy. Some (a few) cringe-worthy moments of horrible dialogue. But not enough in my mind to detract from the overall quality of the film as a whole. I think it just happened to coincide with Costner's decline in popularity, and that kept people from the theaters.

I agree that this is the most ridiculously underrated movie ever. It has a few problems, but it's highly atmospheric and certain scenes (like the mariner teaching Enola how to swim) are PROFOUNDLY beautiful. This is one of my favorite adventure films and I've watched it almost every year since it came out. I'm honestly surprised to find that I love it more with each viewing.

I have been called bad before. Many have said I do things that are not correct to do.

I agree, I simply loved it and have watched it numerous times which I never ever do. I thought it had great character development and your emotions had to be engaged especially in scenes like the one when Deacon and his cronies are peering down into the tanker fuel tank to a man in a boat that has no idea if it is day or night and whose only function is to measure the depth of the oil...gotta be a classic study.

I think I have seen it twice and quite like Waterworld.
I should watch it again as I have not seen it for some years.
I give it a 6 of 10.

What about when the fuel tank is just about to explode towards the end of the movie, with the old man greatfully saying "thank God!". A classic! :)

I loved it. It was a wasted opportunity.

Dennis Hopper was cool, some nice action scenes, but overall quite average.

6.5/10

Don't worry I am some kind of Costner fan.

I'm shocked I like it as well.

I'm always gonna love this movie. I first saw it when I was 11, and it was the first >movie< I had ever saw at the cinema (that WASN'T a Disney cartoon) and I LOVED it!

reply

I'm watching it again today on Netflix, I always liked it; and many years later, I still like it. Never understood why people ragged on it. *I also liked Battlefield Earth and The Postman, I may be in a minority with those!

reply

man seriously!!!!!!
i love this movie. the ratings here just break my heart.

reply

just saw the director's cut on tv today - much better than what i've been told all these years..

Then it is a minority of two. I like all three movies.

reply

Make that three.

@coutterhill - weird, in the past few days I've watched Battlefield Earth and The Postman for the first time, rewatching Waterworld now - taking a break to see why it was ragged on, I love it - enjoyed those other two films as well, BE took a right undeserved beating. Shame.

reply

I've always thought it was much better than it's ratings also.
There were soo many total crapp movies in the '80's-90's. I'm guessing it partly has to do with the big budget. People were expecting it to be the greatest movie of all time. Something that would rival Blade Runner and the Terminator movies. I like the story and the visuals, and the acting isn't bad either.

Yeah, but that was back in the day. The question is, how come this movie is still so underrated, when all the hype had already worn off?

This movie definitely deserves a higher rating - 7/10 at least.

reply

Yeah, I watched this movie for the first time in years and thought it was thoroughly enjoyable. It's The Road Warrior meets Pirates of the Caribbean, you know?
