THE RING!

how come no- one wanted to inspect their (fake) wedding rings?

Women love that sort of thing. Would have been a dead give away.

Bad Plot point.

I don't think they were pretending they were real rings. During war time, many people got married impulsively and could not afford rings, so using rings from his candy box would have been part of the romance of their meeting and marrying. So, they would not have needed to pretend they were real, fancy rings but just what they were. Plus, at dinner the first night, the grandfather did comment on the ring.

Exactly, yes. The world had barely started to come out of The Depression when WWII started. Soldiers went to and came back from war with very little money, for the most part. Wedding rings were not even close to being as important as they were before or after. Many couples had to wait a few years to get proper wedding rings. This is not a plot hole at all.

My grandparents had a whirlwind WWII romance and marriage. They met one day and got married the next. Two weeks later he left for Germany and was gone for 2 years. They didn't have rings until he came home. Grandma wore *a* ring but Grandpa wasn't able to buy a proper one for her until he came home.
