Why did Robin + Michael break up?

after that bed scene, they seemed to have a nice little chat about her "fantasies"...and then they lay there and everything seemed okay.
Switch to the scene in the bar where he's with another woman and gives her a look. She mentions something about firing him.......so..what happened to make them dislike each other and get to that place?

reply

I'm watching the movie now and they don't really say why they broke up. Best I can guess is Robin is still hung up on Russell or even though she thought he was nice for that moment, she wasn't attracted to him...just trying to occupy her time...

reply

I always assumed that, since they had the same kind of job at the firm, that she found out he had no money, and didn't do any of the outdoor activities he said he did. But she also said if she squeezed her pelvis tight, implying he has a small penis, that he was ALMOST like the real thing. No one wants a fat, ugly, broke man with a small weenie.

Just my opinion.

My guess is that she didn't really see anything serious enough with Michael. There is a scene where she's talking in a meeting, and he's being real condescending to her. She also says later in the movie "it's only been a week since I fired him and he was talking marriage." I do agree that she was probably still wanting Russell.

She got pissed off at him during the meeting for being such a smart a$$. She saids in her mind that he would never get a whiff of her ever again. Then she see him at the club with another woman trying to play the same game... Man had money just sucked in bed.

reply

I think Robin thought was truly in love with Leon's character. Due to this love she couldn't find satisfaction with another man. Ofcourse Michael's poor love making skills.

reply

Robin was addicted to 'bad boys' (Russel) and didn't know how to receive a less-than-average looking guy who could give her the world and true love.

reply

In the book Michael was much nicer and he meant all the things that he said to her. She broke up with him b/c she couldn't accept being with someone boring. She liked the bad boys.

reply

In the bed scene, she also said she had to pretend that he was the real thing. I guess that means she had to make herself be with him. She didn't want to be single, but she also didn't want to be with someone who she wasn't crazy about.

Sedagive?!!!

reply

I think in the scene where she and Michael were talking in bed that she was indulging in her fantasies, and he was indulging her. They BOTH knew that they didn't have a future, but they used that moment to pretend as if they had found the one. People do this a lot. Robin was spending time with men to cure her boredom while she was waiting for Russell to come around. She didn't want Michael. She was just venting. It was make-believe, for a moment.

I don't know about the movie, but that definitely wasn't true in the book. Michael sincerely wanted to marry Robin, but she just could not be sexually satisfied by this chubby unpretty man with a small pecker and no learning curve for sexual skills.

reply

According to the book, he was very generous and loving and they got along well outside of the bedroom. Robin "fired" Michael, as tactfully as she could manage, because he wasn't satisfying her sexually. He was unattractive to her eyes and touch, and had no skills or ability to learn techniques to please her and make up for his small equipment.

She was pissed off in that scene you refer to because he'd been clingy and talking marriage the week before, and yet he was already out with someone else. She didn't want him back, but she didn't want to think his interest in marrying her was all talk either.

reply

She 'fired' him in terms of their relationship (I assume it was the 'Russell thing' too). He pointed out a flaw in her report in a meeting...not sure why she couldn't have recovered from that gracefully but...

reply

I think pointing out the flaw is what caused her to lose it. At that meeting after his action, she said in her thoughts something like, you will never get another whiff of this. Her anger could mean she felt betrayed by his action.

He could have pointed out the flaw to her in private instead of embarrassing her in public. But, she could have told him how she felt and tried to work it out instead of just firing him. But, you are more likely to ignore petty stuff and try to work it out with someone you really want to be with.

reply

That's exactly why she broke up with him.

reply

Agreed. I don't get why people don't realize this and instead are trying to make it about his money or that she was a golddigger.

He embarassed her in public.

The guy was a jerk.
