Why was Kirstie Alley smoking cigs in every scene?
What was Carpenter thinking? Anyone...anyone...Bueller?

shareYou've never seen a chain smoker before?

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?
I have, but not in a movie. Was there something significant about the constant
smoking to the story?
Maybe it's due to the constant stress that she is under. Think about it, she took one of the children away during the birth scene and she was secretly conducting research with the rest of the children as people were dying left and right without stopping.
For this context, all that you need to know is that smoking = stress. It's not that big of a deal in this movie.
To stop her eating ?
shareI couldn't help but notice she used to be somewhat attractive. When the kids had her on the slab and she started undressing i was like here we go! but alas...
shareShe wasn't undressing in that sense; she was unzipping her top so she could use a scalpel to cut herself open, like in an autopsy. The "children" forced her to due this in retaliation for cutting up the stillborn infant. If someone does anything bad to them, they will do it right back!
shareShe had an oral fixation that needed to be satisfied. Since she was on her diet, a substitution had to be made. In public, it was cigarettes. In private, ...?
shareCorrect, IMHO; smoking = stress. It´s the same as men who drink beer in movies usually is bad people (beating their wifes and so...)
The stress-aspect is all you need to know when watching this movie.
I have, but not in a movie.Patrick, you haven't seen too many movies then. Filmdom is littered with chain-smoking characters. Check out Humphrey Bogart vehicles such as The Barefoot Contessa, where he would put the good Doctor Verner to shame, with the number of cigarettes he consumes through that movie.🐭 share
chrismahon had the best answer imo...

Reason is a pursuit, not a conclusion.
Smoking is often if not always shorthand for "this female character is a no-nonsense workaholic".
Lois Lane in Superman (also with Reeve) is another example.
Rachel Ticotin played such a character in the TV movie Rock-a-Bye.
"Well, for once the rich white man is in control!" C. M. Burns
Perhaps her character was a homage to the cigerette smoking man from the X-Files.
shareHe smokes, and he likes women who smoke cigarettes. He's an admitted fan of the "Howard Hawksian" woman who smoked cigarettes.
shareThis cannot be a serious question.
"It's Minnie Pearl's murder weapon."
My theories...
1. Because she is a boreing, crap actress who can barely carry her role and they needed something to distract the viewers from just how bad of an actress she is. This is why she is not Just seen smoking, but fiddling around with them in her hands, as to destruct the viewer.
2. To show that she was overworked, hardworking and stressed. Of course her acting didn't convey that well to me so I'm not so sure about this theory OR That theory number one is proven even more so.
3. A nod to the smoking man from x-files.
Theory 1 is, IMO, the most likely.
