I came here for the same thing, LOL.
SPOILERS for several movies in this post:
I had never seen this. I remember when it was released back in 1995, but it was such a flop and so critically derided that I didn't bother to see it. Then, just kind of forgot it over the years, in spite of being a pretty big John Carpenter fan.
Well, because it just got released on Scream Factory blu, I finally decided to get it.
I FINALLY just watched it, and yes, I too was very surprised that Pare got fourth billing, and then barely survives the opening credits.
I remember, though, that there was this little trend going on around that time where they were doing this a lot. To hear them tell it, I'm sure most of them would have alluded to Hitchcock homages. But I remember it happening quite a bit in movies in 1995 and 1996. This would have been one, too, I guess. But I remember being shocked when top-billed Marlon Brando didn't appear onscreen until nearly half an hour into "The Island of Dr. Moreau", and then he is dead at the 43 minute mark. He literally has about 15-16 minutes of screen time in a 100 or so minute movie. There was a big shock when Steven Seagal dies in "Executive Decision" about a half hour in. And Michael Douglas was top billed on "The Ghost and the Darkness", and he doesn't arrive until almost an HOUR in, and then dies, suddenly and OFFSCREEN, after only a few minutes.
