How did the village become damned?

Is it explained in the movie?

"Village of the Damned" does not mean "damned village" it means "village of the damned people". It is not the village that is damned but the people in it who are damned by that they do.

That's a good one though! Made me chuckle at the cleverness.

I am watching it for the first time right now; still on credits. Someone wrote that the movie is about aliens coming into the town and knocked 9 women up. Apparently their kids made the village damned

I thought it was a reference to Charles Fort's The Book of the Damned, a book written in the early twentieth century that documents anomalous phenomena. Christopher Reeves mentions the book near the beginning of the movie.
