Question about the sores on the villains' faces (contains spoilers)

Does anyone know what the sores were that were all over the faces of Mr. Jones and Martin Ricardo? Were the sores explained and I just missed it?

It was very bad sunburn: they were stranded in a boat for days with the tropical sun beating down on them. The novel described Jones and his gang as arriving on the island badly sunburned and near death due to lack of water.
