i liked it even better than cinema paradiso

easily one of the best movies i ever watched ...and the worst or the best thing is i cant tell why..my friend who watched it with me didnt like the sad ending ...but i simply loved it especially the flashbacks of all the ' screentests' ...just so damn touching...having little knowledge of political history of the time and the ;land featured here ...i didnt quite understand the political overtones....can someone elaborate a little on that . thanks.

I don't know if it helps you anything, but when I last watched it, I found it very moving how even the most closed off people in sicily seemed to open their heart in front of his camera. The film itself was useless, so he had it all in his mind. When he drove off, he had all this knowledge in his head, and could not do a thing with it.

The irony that he got a very deep understanding with many people and their problems, while he himself was just a con. The end just makes me believe that he is 'haunted' by them until long.

There weren't really any political overtones...or did I prehaps miss them? In most Tornatore films, politics are mostly plain in sight. The only political connection I can see is the bond between gaining the trust of the people that needed it so many, while just abusing it for yourself. And that is what (from what i've read) seems to form the biggest gap between Sicily and the rest of Italy.

Tornatore is one of my favorite Italian directors. I have 3 of his movies on my Top FLF list, below.

I like this film better than Cinema Paradiso as well, yet CP is the film that everyone brags on here at IMDb.

It's good to see someone has posted on this not so long ago...

I loved the film, but i hated the ending. It was built up so beautifully, but the ending seemed rushed. in the last 15 minutes of the film giuseppe dosen't want her, then he does, he takes her virginity then he is arrested, beaten up does 2 years in jail, gets out, finds out beata has gone crazy visits her and then leaves..

All that in 15 minutes or so, the relationship with beata was never really built up , maybe i missed something but it was never explained why she went crazy.

It was so beautifully and slowly built to just be rushed at the end.

Though i did love the ending with the people montage.
