If all the people on earth were killed by the virus??

why were they afraid to go on the surface of the earth 30 years later ? why was he wearing a hazmat suit?? how was he going to contract the virus? from the bear??

There are many illnesses and diseases that cross over from animals to humans.

The virus is airborne. James comments several time how clean and free of germs the air is in the past. We can assume the animals are unaffected, since they didn't die, but it's still plausible that they can carry the virus.
