should have been a mini-series

It's a shame this subject matter and cast couldn't have gotten the time and production values of the "John Adams" HBO series. The complexities of the times and the characters are necessarily given short shrift due to time.

I hadn't thought of that but completely agree. This movie did a terrific job but had to move along very quickly at times and skim over things because of time constraints. Would be interesting to see, among many other things, portrayals of:
1) the recruitment of Truman by the KKK in the 1920s, his eventual turning them down, and their reported threats against him in later campaigns after he took increasingly civil rights-oriented platforms.
2) the 1940 Senate race between Truman and Stark, a hallmark of Truman's political career that foreshadowed 1948 and in some ways was simply 1948 on a smaller scale and maybe even more amazing than 1948.
3) the Berlin Airlift, one of the most amazing things that happened during the Truman presidency, imo. I would have to think it would have been painful for the editors and director to have to leave this out of the 1995 film.

I agree. The film really could have been a miniseries and it would have greatly added to the color and background of the subject matter. Something like 6-8 hours would have been a good length. I like the film quite a bit anyway but so much detail is sacrificed because of time constraints.

Gary Sinise was great as Truman but for some reason Truman has always been blessed by very good people playing him in movies such as: Kenneth Welsh in 'Hiroshima' and Ed Flanders in many films but notably 'MacArthur'.

Frank: Just a man.
Harmonica: An ancient race.
