smoke ribbons

I was wondering if anybody knows what causes the ribbons of smoke (or whatever it is) that you see after some of the bombs had detonated. They are vertical and you usually see about 5 of them right next to each other, spanning from the ground to the top of the screen. Any answers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Little rockets are fired and they leave smoke trails. When the bomb goes off, the concussion and air blast will distort the smoke trails. By filming how the smoke moves, it can tell them things about the shock wave, like how it reflects off the ground, and efficiency of the coupling of the bombs energy into the atmosphere.

Awesome, thanks for the reply. I figured that they weren't a result of the bomb itself, but I wasn't sure what made them. That makes complete sense.

I know what those dramatic spikes of fire that poke out of the initial fireball(sometimes) are too.

Bwaa, ha, ha, ha!

IF this movie was a documentary, they would've explained that as most people don't know what they are.

IF.

If they'd been making 'Nuclear Bombs For Dummies', and explained absolutely everything, the movie would have been sixteen hours long.
