Noxeema's contradictory behavior...

...when she tells Vida not to get involved with Carol Ann and Virgil's fighting. She is basically saying that when you help people, it can backfire. And yet, she had no problem intervening on behalf of the townswomen because of the rude guys in town. She even resorted to getting physical with Michael Vartan's character. Those other guys could have easily attacked her (as a side note).

Why would she be so against helping Carol Ann? After all, she was being physically abused while the town boys were just being rude. It doesn't make any sense!

But that doesn't make sense...Noxi physically assaulted a man by grabbing his junk and hurting him. The other guys in the group could have easily started beating her up for that act. Or they definitely could have called the cops. I know they were playing it for laughs, but I think it's equally dangerous confronting a group of young, threatening men.

Well I can't speak for Noxi but my mother always said when I couple is fighting (physical or not) don't get involved. Because they are going to make up eventually, and you'll be the one left hurt. Plus she was probably thinking we don't know them well enough to get involved.

I think the four against one matchup still favors Noxeema 👍

The way I see it, it is like when cops have to investigate domestic abuse. The cops actually have to keep an eye on both people because the abused spouse could turn on the ocps just as easy as the one doing the abusing.

It can also turn worse for the abused spouse when they are not around because the abuser will take it out on the spouse even worse.

With the group of town boys Noxeema knew they were all talk and wouldn't do anything. By taking out the head bully and emasculating him in front of the rest they backed down.

I don't think it's entirely contradictory. When she didn't want to get involved with Carol Ann and Virgil, it was b/c she considered it more of a private problem between the two of them. The gals were only in town for a couple of days and it really wasn't their place to get involved in other people's domestic affairs. Just like you probably wouldn't get involved if you overheard your neighbors having an argument. At most, you'd call the police if you suspect that the argument has escalated to a serious physical level but otherwise, you mind your own business.

The scene where she decided to correct the Michael Vartan's character's insulting behaviour was different. That was out in public. When she was standing up for the townswomen, she was trying to make the point that it is not okay to treat people like that. When out in public, a certain level of civility, respect and decorum should be expected of everyone. She has probably been insulted in a similar way countless times in her life, for being a drag queen, for being different. So it didn't surprise me that she felt the need to call the boys out for their rudeness in that situation, while preferring to stay out of Carol Ann & Virgil's far more personal, private problems.

I love your point and I agree.
It wasn't contradictory, but a matter of two different situations.

"Do you even remember what you came here to find?"

Remember she said "there are times when you help people, and there are times when if you help people you ends up getting killed, so you don't help people."

I think she thought she could take on all those guys if she needed to -they seem like the typical muscly but wimpy bullies who crumble when you stand up to them- but Virgil on the other hand was tough, if he wasn't surprised by Vida's attack he would have no problem with tearing all four of them apart.

And yet, she had no problem intervening on behalf of the townswomen because of the rude guys in town.

Sidenote but I misread that as "transwomen"

These are all good points and I want to thank everyone for their thoughts on the matter. I spend far too much time analyzing this film! lol

One other thing I thought of - Noxi was reacting in the moment when she decided to confront the men. It's not that she wasn't scared, but her desire to protect her new friends overpowered her fear. Maybe she thought about what she had done after and realized how serious it could have gotten?

Plus, she was probably very worried for Vida and didn't want her to get hurt. Maybe she didn't know that she could kick ass?!

Good point on Virgil being more of a threat!

Yes, and Noxi was fearful of the rednecks when they first arrived and they also intimidated Chi Chi until Bobby Ray showed up in his pick up. She would have also plucked up a bit of courage by the time the exited the shop and were insulted by them. It was a scene played for laughs anyway and Noxi was male after all and grabbing him by the cazungas wouldn't have been such a big deal. He got what was coming to him, assault or not and they were bullies. A taste of their own medicine. Bobby Lee thought it was hilarious. I loved her reaction trailing behind the other ladies when they were walking away and she had her hand over her mouth stifling her laughter.

With Carol Ann and Virgil, the situation was one of a domestic one and this was something for Vida to resolve.
