Only 6.6/10............. ....

This is a great film, with great atmosphere and great performances (christopher walken stole the show).

Okay so its not the most original storyline but who cares when it works this well. I'd rate it at least 7.5.

What does everyone else think??

reply

I disagree...

the storyline is a lot original, when you think that all the guys are dead since the begin of the movie, and spend the all movie trying to avoid their destiny. Isn't a common gangsta story. It's deeply human. They are just wainting their final brath come, and they don't have time to enjoy life anymore, and they even know it is gonna happen. that's what this movie is about: the things they can do (or need to) in denver when they are already dead. no escape.

i think that's why there's a lot of people who disliked this movie. they want a gangsta storyline, shootings, thoose spice discussions, hot speechs... this movie supress all this *beep* goes directly to the past-gangster moment of the characters.

Less fun and adventure, more realism, drama and emoctional thinking. I believe that young guys can enjoy this movie, but i think it is for a more-growed men.

reply

by the way... I would give it a 8.5...

reply

Yeah okay point taken...i suppose i meant that the whole 'having to do the boss a favour' cliche was a bit unoriginal.

I liked your point 'it's deeply human". This film really deals with each individuals emotions really well. I especially liked the interaction between jimmy and gabrielle anwar's character. I think andy garcia can say so much in this film without saying much at all (if you get what i mean?!)

"Less fun" - i'm not so sure i agree with that. There are some really colourful characters in this film and some great exciting scenes.

reply

yeah... owe a favor to the boss is a lil' unoriginal... even if there is a nice detail on that, jimmy took the note off of New Orleans Sal, but the result is the same... actually, it's a bit hard to put a guy with so much decency in the middle of the gangsters enviroment...

anyway, when I said "less fun" i mean the movie wasn't to be a blockbuster or something like that... there are some funny moments...

but, it looks to me that we agree in our opinions...

8.5? Nah. It was good. But it wasn't that good. An 8.5 on the IMDB would put it in the top 250, and it doesn't deserve the Top 250. Underrated movies like Zero Effect deserve the Top 250, but not "Things..."

I'll rate it a 7.0. or atleast 6.8, but not in the 8s.

reply

Gotta derek. You have just mentioned two of my favourite films. I firmly believe both Zero Efeect and Things belong in the top 250 purely based on the fact that they do original things with genres that usually get the same storylines rehahshed. If more films did this movie viewing would be exciting more often than it is.

I'm not trying to be a complete a-hole. But PLEASE 'jotaweb' try to write some correct English. It's mindnumbing trying to discypher your language.

At least try...

I understood his writing just find, Ray... perhaps it's not his writing that is to blame, but your desire to find something to complain about, or your inability to read properly.

reply

I'm very suprised - 6.6?
I know this is only imdb but...
I consider this movie one of the best movies in the early 90s with movies like pulp fiction, The Usual suspects, Little Odessa (underrated like Things to do...)

but on the other hand - it's just imdb

reply

The storyline isn't so much unoriginal as boring. The acting, cinematography, directing, and dialogue were all great. Its just the big picture, the story itself, which wasn't very captivating. The romance between Garcia and Anwar was pretty lukewarm too.

reply

it was not a "Romance story" is a story of facing your own mortaliy, and this film in my opinon is a 10

reply

I think its very underated and deserved something in the region of 7.8.

I think it is underrated as well, but IMDb isn't really about rating good movies what they should be rated. It's about what is popular among kids for the most part. The Lord of the Rings trilogy taking 3 of the top 20 slots of all time? They were good, but come on now. Plus I think the Return of the King was the weakest of the three and it's at #4 all-time. I can go on all day about LOTR, but that's not what this thread is about.

Basically, IMDb is the best movie site out there for information. However, the ratings are usually just a popularity contest for the current fad.

Personally, Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead is one of my favorite movies, regardless of what the "Top 1000 voters," who from what I gather don't like anything made after 1970, think about it.

reply

I'd rate it ' 8.5 '!

reply

I like it more than I should now, mostly because of the nostalgia factor - I remember really liking it in my teens.

Still wouldn't rate it higher than 7.
