"Ye didnt weigh the chain did ye doc"

reply

Yeah, you know I love this movie. I just can't understand why more people don't like it. But then there have been movies a lot of others loved that I didn't care for at all. It is what it is, as they'd say in the film.

One of my favorite lines - I (still) use it constantly, and I saw this as soon as it came out :)

Conservatives think liberals are stupid...

You go around saying "give it a name" ?

Not good bro.

Those characters were all cool and got away with it.You by definition are not cool.

Good list with the major glaring exception of "Butterfly Effect." That was average at best.

Let's replace that with your choice of the following:
-Boondock Saints
-True Romance
-Mulholland Drive
-Any Wes Anderson movie
-Battle Royale

That's just off the top of my head. Always interested in comments.

reply

"Sleepers" is total cliché. I haven´t seen Boondock Saints and Battle Royale, but I agree with the others. Here´s my list (no order):

- The Pope of Greenwich Village
- Rumblefish
- Arizona Dream
- Happiness
- Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead

reply

I really disliked Boondock Saints, It may have been do to every frat guy I knew hyping up the movie as if an underground Pulp Fiction. Sadly I was disappointed. Anyway, here's my list in no particular order.

-Things to do in Denver when you're Dead (Of course)
-Killing Zoe (Eric Stoltz in Paris, drugs, bank robbery. Directed by Roger Avary who worked with Tarantino on True Romance, Reservoir Dogs, and Pulp Fiction)
-The Salton Sea (Val Kilmer, Vincent D'Onofrio, and crystal meth)
-True Romance (Christian Slater when he was cool)
-The Prophecy (Gotta love Walken. Eric Stoltz is also in this)

...and a bonus
-Mute Witness (The first half was awesome, the second half was okay. But it's definitely worth a rental)

Off the top of my head

Repo Man (1984)
THX 1138 (1971)
Harold and Maude (1971)
Bad Company (1972)
The Devils (1971)

I've missed some good movies because of dumb titles. Missed this one, thought it was a comedy; found out it's a good movie - eleven years after release.

Remember, you don't have to be smart if you can pretend to be someone else who is...

and sleepers and battle royale arent underated

end of confrontation. one must die!

reply

I'll give you:

1. Things To Do In Denver...
2. Dogma

but in addition to those I'd say:
3. The Big Lebowski
4. State of Grace (the Penn/Oldman one from 1990)
5. Pitch Black

reply

How is Battle Royale underrated? I've never heard anyone say anything bad about it ever.

Airbus, you got a taste that matches mine perfectly. Killing Zoe is fantastic, True Romance is the best thing Tarantino ever put his hands on (he wrote the screenplay). Remember that dialogue between Slater´s dad (Dennis Hopper) and Walken? That was something I´ll never forget, how he offended the wise guy in the most elegant, dissimulated way. The dialogues in that movie are lessons of good writting. Salton Sea is good, maybe a bit too dogmatic, but still a great flick.

Some others:
- The movie about Spinal Tap, forgot the title
- Jennifer 8 (excellent thriller, Uma Thurman at her best)
- To Die For (nobody likes that, I think it´s a very profound movie if you really pay attention.
- The Ninth Gate (same comment as the one above, a film to watch 2 or 3 times, every time you watch, the more you grasp the plot and the more you like it. Remember, that´s Polansky´s)
- The King of New York (I admit I love mob movies and Walken, this one, directed by the junkie Abel Ferrara is a remarkable tale of the eternal theme os ascension, glory and decay)

Some people never go crazy. What truly horrible lives they must lead.

reply

Finally! Someone likes "To Die For". I don't have a favorite movie, but I do have favorite movies and this one is near the top of the list. Excellent everything and a good example of Nicole Kidman's acting ability, wasted in such tripe as "Far And Away". Buck Henry's unique humor is displayed throughout. Few movies will ever rise to the level of "To Die For".

reply

KILLING ZOE would probably be my #1 in this category. and props for listing THE PROPHECY (my favorite depiction of satan played by viggo mortensen. i'd also add:

KALIFORNIA (1993) (d. Dominic Sena)
a lesser known film about an ivy league yuppie couple going on a cross-country road trip with a white trash couple. juliette lewis gives a stunning performance as a good-natured simpleton and brad bitt (who she was dating at the time) as a sociopathic serial killer. very dark, smart, and beautifully filmed.

KILLING ZOE (1994) (d. Roger Avary)
another lesser-known indie film (an american-french production), starring eric stoltz and french actress julie delpy. director roger avary was an old buddy of quentin tarentino's. this movie is a bit more raw than tarentino's polished films. about a bank heist in paris gone terribly wrong.

RAPA NUI (1994) (d. Kevin Reynolds)
this film, unfairly skewered by the critics upon its release, blew me away the first time i saw it. the story can be seen as an analogy of modern day society: a microcosm our our own environment. easter island, before the white man discovered it, was a paradise. it was eventually turned into a barren land, due to the use of all the trees to build the stone heads. stars jason lee and the gorgeous sandrine holt.

SLC PUNK (1998) (d. James Merendino)
the role matthew lillard was born to play, in my opinion. about a group of anarchist punk rockers in the 1980s, living in the very conservative and close-minded town of salt lake city, utah (the mormon capital of the world). lillard's rebellion of the establishment starts to crack as he slowly realizes that he needs to make a future for himself.

SWIMMING WITH SHARKS (1994)
another corporate office film, this time as a dark comedy. frank whaley plays a country bumpkin, recently relocated to los angeles, who works for the boss from hell. kevin spacey steals every scene as the cold-hearted, abusive bastard. michelle forbes (also in KALIFORNIA) plays a supporting role.

GARDEN STATE (2004)
zach braff wrote, directed, and stars in this drama-comedy about a tv-movie star revisiting his home town in jersey. he decides to leave his medication for depression in los angeles, and slowly emotions he hasn't felt in years come to the surface. natalie portman (wonderful, as always) plays his wacky, but beautiful new love interest. one of those films that captures the feelings of falling in love. a refreshingly unique film.

sunshine
Chasing Amy (1997)
Dancer in the Dark (2000)
Groove (2000)
The Rapture (1991)-
Strange Days (DVD) (LBX) (1995)
Serenity

alpha dog (kinda like BULLY. based on a true story. timberlake was actually great in it. based on true story)

"There are more stars in the universe than there are grains of sand on all the beaches on Earth."

reply

oh love your list.. The Salton Sea is one of the weirdest yet great films.. it's like a David Lynch film but it didn't give me a headache (his films always do)

True Romance --- "you're so cool" really nothing else needs to be said about that one!!!

The Prophecy... has one of my fave lines, spoken by Walken, of course..."I just want things to be like they were when He loved US the best" (that is a paraphrase I am sure, haven't seen the film in ages!) Love it!!! Glen Danzig is in the second one as an angel... the second one isn't bad.. but after that it's all downhill...

Oh and don't forget "Lucky Number Slevin" great fun... you gotta love a film with Ben Kingsley and Morgan Freeman as crime bosses :)

Nice see The Pope of Greenwich Village mentioned. So many memorable scenes. Geraldine Page telling off M. Emmet Walsh "...they'll do a story on the 6 o'clock news have the city in teeeears". Eric Roberts dancing on the street "cop *beep* his pants, cop *beep* his pants"!! Mickey Rourke getting the big news from Daryl Hannah. Paulie forgetting to tip the toll booth guy on the way back from the track "what am I - Saneee Claus?" And of course "Charlie....they took my thumb!!!" Wonderful movie that is sadly underrated.

"You put that coat on and you don't say goodbye to NOBODY!" - Paulie

"True Romance" and "Things To Do..." are excellent movies and tremendously underrated. I happen to think "Suicide Kings" belongs in the same category. Maybe the point is any movie with Christopher Walken in it is much better than critics give it credit for.

reply

Suicide Kings is a great movie! I'd also throw Beautiful Girls and A Love Song for Bobby Long into the mix of great underrated movies.

"She's, like, a biscuit older than me..."

reply

I would say Jacob's Ladder (1990)...

1. City of Industry, the scene where Harvey Keitel is playing patience and is loosin his temper diserves a friggin oscar, never seen a more powerfull scene.
2. DeepRising, silly story but good amusement.
3. Liar, Tim Roth at his best.
4. Vampires, dunno why but I love that movie, best vampire movie after Dusk till Dawn
5. Things to do, PAAAARRTTHHEEEY I am godzillaaa ... you ... are Japaaaan :)

Any last words ?
Shut the *beep* up

reply

Ahhhhrgggh! YES! Liar is an AMAZING film that no one has ever heard of! Tim Roth has never been better. Well, maybe 'Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead.'

Denver is the most underrated film of all time. Just goes to show eh? Clever marketing and the right release date matters so much!

reply

Best of the 'underrated' category in no particular order.

Moonlight Mile
TTDIDWYD
The Hudsucker Proxy
Suspect Zero
Matchstick Men
Ravenous
Rendition
Spartan

reply

+1 for Deep Rising, some wonderful one liners...

In my opinion (and you're welcome to disagree) I've always thought that "The Faculty" is a very underrated movie.

It's almost like "The Breakfast Club" the main characters play almost exactly the same roles (geek, outcast, jock, prom queen, rebel) only with Aliens, the same cliques still apply between the characters.

Plus It's got a Kevin Williamson screenplay, Rodruiguez directing and a killer cast (Hartnett as Zeke is the best character he's ever played).

"Hell is a place much like London"
Shelley

reply

Hummmm, I've actually thought of this one when top underrated comes to mind but in the top 5? We will see gents. I wish I could come back to this post later on, if I makes much of a difference or not bit here it goes....

When can it be over, I say.

After Hours
Extreme Prejudice
Jacob's Ladder
Juno

reply

The Man Who Wasn't There
Kung Pow
ALI G Indahouse
Sympathy For mr Vengence(prob more unknown than underrated)
Bad Boy Bubby - I think it's a cult film in Austrailia, but fairly unknown outside of Aus.

"Go outside. Get Sammy the Snake, Joe Rags, Big Angie."

reply

The man who wasnt there is definately underrated. My favourite Coen brothers film, but you hardly see it ever mentioned when people talk about their films

reply

...I gotta throw in 'The City Of Lost Children' by Jeunet & Caro. Ron Pearlman didn't speak a word of French before he made this film other than 'garage'.

Booty Time...Booty Time...Across The U.S.AAAA!

reply

Things To Do In Denver and True Romance are always at the top of my list. Like someone mentioned, True Romance is often missed because of the title. I don't know how many people I've told about it only to hear "The title is True Romance? That sounds a little girly."

City Of Lost Children was great as well, good call on that one.

reply

License to Kill
To live and die in LA
The Great White Hype
Sideout(I know I will hear *beep* for it)
Hamburger Hill

Seeing Things to do in Denver is a priority

reply

Some great ones have been mentioned already that I certainly agree with...and couldn't agree more with this one and "True Romance" being at the top of "movies with misdirected titles"! If Pulp Fiction wasn't such a huge hit, the same probably could be said about it as well. But since everyone knows it, the title actually identifies with it? This would be a good list on it's own for sure though. I remember someone recommending this movie to me and I assumed it was about someone living their last days in Denver, knowing they were dying (with cancer perhaps). No wonder they didn't tell me anything about the plot!

I would add "Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels" & "Snatch" to this genre of underrated films.

Jerry (Might be spelled Gerry) - Gus Van Sant flick with Damon and Casey Affleck.

Sleuth - The remake with Jude Law and Michael Caine is pretty intense, but I don't know anyone who knows there was even a recent remake.

Welcome to Collinwood - Directed by Clooney, starring Sam Rockwell, Will Macy, Luis Guzman, and Clooney himself. Hilarious.

Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead - I guess you guys know this one...

The Hammer - Written, directed, and starring Adam Carolla, totally unexpectedly awesome. Really funny and with an actual serious and respectable plot.
