I'm sorry...but this seems so fake

Well, some of it does anyway. The conversations with some of the hookers and the stripper singers seem pretty real, but when they start to have people jacking off or doing it in the back seat I start to wonder if this is an excuse for soft porn HBO style. Anybody else see where I'm coming from?

You are an idiot, nuff said.

you can say "sorry, but..." on these boards. there's some real *beep* here that will call you names just for voicing your opinion. you have to step up, be a man and say "TAXICAB CONFESSIONS is a pile of fake crap TV."

reply

Who cares?!? The show is very ENTERTAINING. Besides, most of everything on the tube is fake today. Ever hear of "Reality" TV?

reply

I have to agree, I drove a cab for about 4 months in Vancouver and I've seen some pretty messed up stuff. But no one, I mean no one has ever opened up to me like the people on this show. I've had hookers offer to pay their fair by "other means" I've had people threaten me and try to rip me off, but no one as ever told me openly about their drug habit.

Not to mention I've never been in a cab in the US that didn't have a barrier in between the passenger an the driver. I admit that it is different in Canada, I mean we have people sittin right up front with us, but any time I've been in the US there was a window at the very least!

The taxi drivers in Winnipeg are idoits! It's unbelievable! But they have this plexi-glass dome behind their head, b/c the shootings before hand.

reply

I somewhat agree---and disagree. I have been in many cabs that never had a window-I am in Maryland,US.
But I must say that it seems fake when people tell the cab driver X,Y and Z about them. Why be so social? Why open up?

reply

It seems real to me. You asked why they tell all these things, and I think it's b/c people love talking about themselves. They WANT to talk about their secrets, demons, and whatever; but the beauty of telling these things to an interested cabbie, is that you probably will never see them again but you still get the satisfaction of saying whatever you want & totally being yourself - or being who you want to be w/o any kind of repurcussion or consequence later.

Also - why do you all keep saying they're all "so attractive" and that's why it can't be real?! To me, they look like regular people, some good, some bad, but overall just plain people like anybody else.

It all depends on how you engage people. If you are nosy enough to prod a little, and you are a perfect stranger you can get people to tell you all about themselves. Most people are willing, even looking, to open up to someone like that, since everyone is an expert on themselves. I fixed computers for a couple of years and met all kinds of interesting people who were more than willing to share very personal things as soon as you show a little bit of interest in their lives.

Really, the trick is to ask the right question so that you get people talking without even thinking about what they are saying. The guys in this show are pros at knowing just what to ask- and I imagine it wouldn't take more than a few weeks to get a show's worth of unique perspectives if you are engaging people the way they do. It would be alot more work to script it, IMO, to find a new group of diverse actors who can pull the parts of so well would be another feat altogether. Why go to all the work to create a fake glimpse of humanity when real people will give you the real thing for free?

The first thing I concluded after watching one episode in the beginning of the run, was... this crap is so contrived. These people can be seen trying to not look at the camera. It was more poor PR for cab drivers. Travis Bickle made us all repressed homicidal maniacs, TC makes us all voyeurs. BS! We need better PR. P.S. I'm a 41 yr vet cab driver.

I used to think this show started before 1995. More like 1993.

I remember SNL did a pretty funny parody of it.

reply

I dunno, I believe it. There are people out there who live nothing like me.

reply

I also think its real. This show shows that we have some unique in this world. Honestly. It sorta is hard to believe that these random people would tell their life stories for cab drivers but all the cab drivers do is ask and the people tell. Maybe its that easy. However I do remember the one where this couple came in and the cab driver was talking about getting married. The guy was saying I dont know about getting married and then all of a sudden he just pulls out a ring from his coat pocket. That one was kinda unbelievable.

This is late night in New York. It's very real. As are the ones in Vegas. Why do you think they chose cities like that? Weird things happen at night.

You have to take into account that alcohol is an effective truth serum. I've had some major conflicts due to saying thing I'd never say sober. I think it wasn't staged but that they had to go through TONS of tape to get the selected people.

The show is so gritty, it seems like it would be really difficult to fake so effectively. I just watched a couple of episodes tonight and I never once got the impression that I was being led to believe something was real when it wasn't. I definetaly noticed edits and cuts that helped keep the focus of the conversation flowing without pause or passengers needing to explain directions and to trim out any off-topic material.

The cadences in the speech patterns, the seemingly random acts that go unexplained, the broken answers and talking over one another, I think that it would be very difficult to fake it or else the actors they've hired are very talented in both acting and adlibbing. Not to mention that I've heard of stories from taxi cabs drivers that go along these lines before the show had aired.

I think a particular point to remember is that the cab drivers are pretty much only asking questions. You'd be surprised at how open a stranger can be if you take a genuine interest in what's happening to them at a particular moment if you just ask the right questions. I've had people be open about drugs after just meeting them. It's all about the personality of who you're speaking with and how your persona plays off of them.

If this was in fact fake, I'd be disappointed but impressed with the outcome.

reply

I have to agree with it being real. Especially people who are drunk will start talking with the cabbies. I myself have been known to talk a lot with cab drivers. LOL. It's just too boring to sit and not say anything.

My dad drove cabs late night in New York city for a year or two, and from what he told me, there are people that have sex in the back of Taxi cabs. That's also why it's now illegal to have sex in the back of limos, but people still do.

reply

I've always thought it was fake, or at least staged. The 'acting' is terrible, but since when do cabs in large cities drive for long periods without stopping? These cab rides go on for long enough to allow the stories to unreel.

reply

This show is so fake. You ever notice how all the lesbians in the cab all look too hot and feminine and oh--just happen to be into guys, too. It's all prefabricated soft porn.

That's kind of an indication that this show might be a little staged as well.
