So god is less powerful than the demons?

The way the movie made it out it seems that god is less powerful than the demons. The demons could control the universe with the keys until god came forward and said let there be light. God hid the keys, but the demons were able to find them and if they get them all they bring back the dark. Does that not make god weaker than the demons? It also made me think of as soon as the demons bring back the dark all god has to do is say let there be light again and the demons would be banished.

Final note: In the movie Jesus just happened to be a carpenter that the Romans were executing not the son of god. So what about human blood in the key protects it from demons?

God gives us the tools we need to fight for ourself it's like a teacher giving you a book and then reading it and taking a test for you

Are you actually asking a question about fictional characters? lol, not sure what is nuttier, a fictional film or real-life nutbags who believe in god.

I love this film, but that is one of the reasons why I'm an atheist.

God is full of sh!t......an absentee landlord.

Actually, I was referring to all religions, not just Christianity. I'm an equal opportunity hater.

You make some good points. However, I've seen too many religious hypocrites that can't live up to their own standards. They sh!t all over people, and still have the gall to consider themselves decent human beings.

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, and say that you're a good person. But quite honestly, that leaves you in the religious minority.

I would bet a million bucks that you probably don't even know that many Christains and just go by what you see on TV. And even if you did know a sizeable amount, you don't know them all, which makes your comment about good Christians being the minority look really stupid.

I didn't get any of that from the story. We all know that the bible says God created the earth. So it is here. It was dark in the beginning. We all know the story well. Where did you get that the demons were more powerful in the movie anywhere? Perhaps in the beginning that void had life and he, like any good artist, decided the first set wasn't going to be the best. We all create and keep trying until we find that piece that really speaks to us. Humans really spoke to God. He loved us. It ticked off the angels, according to previous movies and some texts that exist that people don't get to read. They made reference to Jesus but they didn't any way make him any less than miraculous. The blood being his is what made the keys important and likely gave them the magically and seemingly cosmic ability to slap a tattoo on a new person's hand and align stars-in case you missed that part.

He doesn't have to be weaker than the demons. Two alternate possibilities are

1. God is giving the demons some leeway (for whatever reason).

2. God is as powerful as the demons (which means neither side can beat the other).

Life is like a box of chocolates. A cheap, thoughtless, perfunctory gift that nobody ever asks for.

Religion seems utterly stupid in its dumbed down version, that is, the literal infantile idiocy it has devolved in; originally it was a kind of attempt at science that used allegory and could only be explained in the terms of psychology; it might have tried to describe in mythical terms atavistic truths about the universe, perception and the origin and destiny of mankind.
In this respect, the problem of evil, which has had religion in trouble with philosophers for thousands of years, can only be clarified when put in the real context where it came from, ancient traditions of the middle east, gnostic, zoroastric, neoplatonic, etc., which are the real basis of hebrew, christian and other religions. They basically state that god is not the powerful creator of the universe that our modern infantile religions pretend it is, but has no direct power over the material world, and that's exactly why morality and personal responsibility make more sense; it states the material world is the work of the demiurge, or an evil being, very powerful that rules our lives and everything out there. God would be a faint spiritual influence, like a spark in the darkness. And if you analyze closely the figure of Jesus and whats attributed to him, his sayings and actions, there is nothing closer to a gnostic position of renunciation than him, very similar to the principle of no force in buddhism and taoism.
But all the nonsense that it became into, the real pagan superstition it became to doesnt make any sense: an omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent being, that is infinitely powerful, pesent and conscious, and at the same time infinitely and eternally good, is in blatant contradiction with the reality out and inside. Evil has no place, no matter how many times you say he allowed evil so we could have free will... so let me think, he is also infinitely a moron because he values more that man can have free will just to worship himself, and if not then to be punished eternally for not complying... what a lot of turd here. It is more important to him that man is vulnerable to evil than the peace of the world.
But it is all just a lot of bable that happened when man got tangled in his own attempts at rationalizing and abusing ancient traditions to suit their own political materialistic interests, for the real god of ancient gnostics has no inherence in the world, thus the "world" has a negative connotation, the "flesh", and only inside is the realm of the spirit.
So yeah according to ancient traditions the world was already in chaos and darkness, and god is but an allegory of the light and will in man to improve those conditions, a work in progress, not a perfect, absttract being, but a possible development.
But it seems most people are lazy and stupid so they cant be told any of this, or so afraid of the truth will get mad at you

Can't you see, man is god, capable of great good and evil, or both at the same time. Jezz, that book is full of *beep* it's a good book if u throw 99% of *beep* in it.

The increase in human knowledge is the cause of the decline of religions.

Welll said. Though maybe a bit aggressive like you're trying to proselytize believers to atheism. Which is a little ironic isn't it?

Thanks for the essay on a message board but tl dr. You're not smart for being atheist, but nice try though.

To OP: You're reading too much into movie, especially mid '90s movie.

and the whole thing about "if demons get the key they will bring the darkness" was purely for dramatic purpose, so there would be a reason why characters were willing to die in the movie or why demons will attack in the first place and overall "high stake" for climax.

reply

1) Your notion that "if demons get the key they will bring the darkness" is only for dramatic effect makes no sense. Why is it explicitly stated in the film if it was not meant for the story? You might as well say that everything else in the film was for dramatic effect as well. You might as well state that the antagonists are really mobster aliens from another galaxy, and that the whole claim of them being "demons" was only for "dramatic purpose." Why put anything in a story at all?

2) "You're reading too much into movie, especially mid '90s movie." What does reading things into a film have to do with the decade that the thing was produced in? Is it more reasonable to read things into a 70s film then as opposed to a 90s one?

Make sense, man.

At no point does this movie assert that Jesus is not the Son of God.

In fact, it asserts the opposite. Jesus being the Son of God is why Jesus' blood stops demons.

The way the movie made it out it seems that god is less powerful than the demons.

No, it doesn't do that either.

It also made me think of as soon as the demons bring back the dark all god has to do is say let there be light again and the demons would be banished.

This is very true. But then again, demons (except for satan) are generally not known for being smart. That's why they chose to do evil and become demons who suffer for eternity instead of being good, going to Heaven, and living an easy & happy life in paradise.
