Was even necessary to make him and her woman to be divorced? I can see no reason for that.

And begging too take his kids to the game.
It's pointless but they force these tropes on you in films and TV.
At least the kids didn't resent him and treat him like with contempt like most kids do their dad's in media.

it is a classic dramatic tool for writers.

'the hero has to start at the lowest point in his life.'

in die hard john and his wife are at odds too.
