Transferring memories is unrealistic

People's brains are unique so telepathy or transfer of memories will likely never be possible.
Perhaps it will be possible to record your own experiences and replay them later because your brain won't have changed much in the meantime.

Also, the advanced technology seemed irrelevant to the plot, the same experiences could be had with ordinary VR.

That's nice. I'm sure you've got something to back up your claim other than your rectum?

WORDS MEAN THINGS! Also, before you come to bitch about a plot hole, rewatch the show/movie.

What?

HA ha , spot on Danzig!

Actually, the same experiences can't be had by "ordinary" VR, because, had the tech in the movie been real, it was designed to let the user actually experience the memory as though they themselves were the ones going through it. Like, Lenny's friend in the wheelchair with no legs. The memory Lenny recorded of himself running let his friend actually FEEL like he himself were running. With standard vr, he'd be able to see the legs on the program and see the scenery at the beach to by add though he were running, but he couldn't experience the *sensation* of running. That's the difference.

The brain is still being explored by scientists. Nobody has concluded that our memories can never be transfered or preserved by other means.

Humans didn't think we could transplant organs to other people not too long ago either.

Yeah, and they said that man would never fly.

Okay, let's just hypothetically say it was possible.

If the film would've taken place in today's age, combined with the internet, people would be downloading other people's memories / experiences. That would be so trippy...and creepy. I'm pretty sure that form of technology would be abused. That's the major flaw of this film. Are you meaning to tell me that the entire trade of these memory files was being conducted through some underground sketchy disc selling business? And what about the extra components? Who would have the money for something that advanced? I doubt the average person could afford it. These are important details that were left out. This film was way ahead of it's time. If the internet were involved, the story would've made more sense.
