Well Worth Watching

This isn't a true story per say. It uses the backdrop of the STONEWALL riot as a focal point. However it is a very good movie! It is being re-released on DVD in May 2008. SO don't pay a huge price for a used one!

The story of La Miranda and Matty Dean, and the romance between Bostonian and Vinny (pretty much an amalgamation of the three Stonewall Inn owners) were made for the movie, but a lot of the situtations are done almost verbatim. To the way the Mattachine meetings were held to Bostonian being pushed outside the bar and swinging at the cop pretty much starting the riot. A drag queen by the name Tammy Novak was who Bostonian was channeling at that point. The raids were pretty much dead on (down to the amount of money they were being paid off to stay away), the Rockette-like chanting of "We are the village queens...", the crowd chanting "Gay Power," the queen getting the keys to the handcuffs, the parking meter used as battering ram, the cops hiding inside the bar, etc. It all happened pretty much exactly as it did back then. I was actually surprised at the level of detail that movie paid to the actual events.
