DVD from Germany has no subtitles

I originally saw this movie at a film festival here in Hollywood, and it was shown with English subtitles. I liked the movie that I searched it down and found it for sale on a German web site. So I ordered it from Germany, since I have a region free DVD player, but when I played it, there were no subtitle options. I would think that all German movies would have subtitle options, since more people speak and understand English than German. Why would they omit the subtitles when the work had obviously already been done for the print version?

If you do not understand German, you will need to see this in a theater - not on DVD.
