Why is it not as cult as Alien, Predator and The Terminator?

Species is actually an amazing sci fi horror. The same cannot be said about its sequels thought.

But I still wonder why it doesn't have the same cult status of the other movies mentioned. Is it because of the sex?

I wouldn't classify any of the movies/franchises you listed as "cult". Those are all very popular, well known, mainstream franchises. A cult film is one that has more of an "underground" following of hardcore fans. Sometimes that can grow enough to catch the attention of more mainstream audiences. Rocky Horror Picture Show or Troll 2 would fall into that category. But a cult film isn't typically widely known/loved.

With regards to the legacy of the movie itself, I kinda think a number of things hold it back from being considered a true classic. It is kind of a mismash of genres and most people will remember it as the movie where the hot alien babe tried to get laid. Not that there's anything wrong with that. I'm a big fan of the movie. That said, I would never put it in the same class as something like Alien or Terminator.

Agreed. Not sure if this film has a cult following, but I certainly don't think it's any where near as good as the above mentioned three.🐭

I just watched it for maybe the third or fourth time and all I can say is that it's not really a very good movie.

One thing that it lacks is tension. There's nothing edge-of-your-seat about this thing. Some parts where it tries fail miserably (like the whole squirrel thing...that's just embarrassing).

It's a good story, but one that can be told in 60 minutes, easily. It feels like there's a lot of padding in the film. The most redeeming thing, the thing that it's known for is the abundance breasts. When your sci-fi gripper is best-remembered as a schoolboy fantasy film, then it's not really going to succeed as intended.

But it was good enough to watch 3 or 4 times, right??

I wouldn't say it's a cult film, but I like it and usually watch it when it's on tv. Plus it has a great cast and a hot alien.

I agree. It may not be as good as “Aliens,” “Terminator” and “Terminator 2,” but it’s on par with “Alien” (and marginally better IMHO) and superior to “Predator.” Then again, it depends on what you want in a sci-fi blockbuster. As far as I’m concerned, “Species” delivers the goods (and it has nothing to do with Sil or the sex scenes since statuesque blondes don't trip my trigger; I prefer shorter, curvier women).

I like Species and have it on DVD, but no way is it on par with Alien (1979). Species has a good cast but the suspense never really equals Alien.

Because it's not as good as those three films. (It's solid, but really? Alien & The Terminator are arguably Top 250 level films, and Predator isn't too far behind).

Because it's complete garbage.

Because the idea is perfect, yet better than the film itself. And in the films you mentioned the story is complemented by great characters while Spieces is overshadowed by lame characters.

Still a guilty pleasure.
