Where was this suppose to take place? The midwest or south?

Savannah, GA

It was either Georgia or South Carolina based upon the sign that said "Low Country". Both of those states are known for this.

EDIT: I just saw the last scene and that is Savannah, Ga for sure.

They're supposed to be somewhere in Louisiana.

The original screenplay had it set in Tennessee, but Callie Khouri at some point moved the action to South Carolina.
It was mostly filmed around Savannah, but the King estate is the Davant Planation across the Savannah River in South Carolina. They're in the process of turning it into an exclusive golf club. Ugh.
