Why confronted father?

I just saw this movie. I liked it and will probably watch it again at some point.
The one thing that really bothered me is WHY did the two men drive out to Rashid/Thomas father's place and force the boy to fess up that he was his son?

That seemed more than a little out of character to me. I don't think I would have forced the truth between two people like that and I don't believe those two characters, Paul and Auggie would have either.

They were just going to visit Thomas, they didn't know he had been lying again. When they walked in on that, their personalities were too straight forward to participate in Thomas's games, so even though it wasn't technically their place to interfere, they forced him to come clean. They didn't really have a choice though. They obviously weren't going to lie the whole time, and they couldn't just get back in the car and drive away after coming so far.
