Not 'pretentious,' but 'pre-eleventious.'

That's 'pretentious' plus one. And that's on top of 'boring.' If you are in an elevated mood, really enjoying life, watch this film. See if you then don't want to commit suicide. The people I saw this with couldn't stop talking about how great this movie was. As for me, I had to drop "NoDoz" throughout the movie. I'm still sleepy, and that was 1995.

I thought it was ok, but I probably wouldn't have liked it had the casting not been so good. No matter what Harvey Keitel is saying I'm always interested. I usually don't like William Hurt, but he gave a really good performance too. His accent was really subtle and well done, and his mannerisms and behavior was really interesting. Also Forest Whitaker was good, only overacted a tad bit one time, but the rest of the time his performance was great, really felt it. As for the rest of the movie, it was a little pretentious. Particularly the final scene, crappy indie music playing, shots of white hands and black hands together, pretty lame to be honest. And the whole troubled but brilliant black youth coming to stay with you, awfully reminiscent of Six Degrees of Separation. The movie wasn't great, but it was ok. Good acting, and fairly entertaining for a one time watch.

I saw it and felt no such impulse.

Interesting how you saw this movie in 1995, had to drop "NoDoz" throughout, then somehow decided, 16 years later, to post a review of a film that you felt would endanger people's sense of self-preservation.
