Worth watching for Judd alone.

Although in general I found this film pretty uninteresting, I was absolutely mesmerized by Ashley Judd's performance. Now I want to watch/rewatch most of her movies.

She looked too old for the part.

I agree, way too old, it was silly. Also the actor playing Rasheed was way too old. As the trivia section mentions, that actor is only two years younger than Forrest Whitaker. Hard to find good young actors though, especially teens. At that age they are self conscious and awkward and are unlikely to deliver good performances. Just look how terrible Haley Joel Osment got as soon as he hit puberty.

I agree with the OP. I saw this when it first came out and had never seen Judd act before. I thought she was galvanizing. She blew me away.

She actually scared me.

I like the part where she takes a drag from her cigarette and says, "what baby?" Her delivery was great.
