Molly's rape

1. Molly was probably the only likable character in this movie. Thanks Showgirls. 2. Did no one hear her screaming? There was a totally quiet song playing and the French doors were open in the room.

I was confused by her return to the party. Did they really just rape her and let her return downstairs to a room full of people all bloody and battered?? Wtf? Everyone at the party saw Molly on Andrew's arm all night. Its not like you can miss him. The dude was like 6'7. So if I were one of the guests I would assume he raped her.

Rainsville27,

You forget that he was the toast of Vegas and like the real world, famous people are protected...sometimes. I think it was asked if he was going to jail and the police said, No. Which is why, he got his butt kicked  

I also hate the part of Molly being raped.

I have a feeling that he had done it before that is why they said that he was part of a team and if Nomi liked her Molly would get a dress shop. He was used to getting away with it. I don't like this movie, but I loved that scene where she beat Andrew up. If she kept going for a couple of more minutes, she probably could have killed him.

reply

b73142,

I agree with your statement. Too bad she didn't cut something off as well. That would have stopped him from attacking another woman.

Same here. I don't like scenes of rape in movies, but do love it when the men get what they deserved from a fierce and brutal beating. Real life should be like that as well. Crimes of rape would drop IMHO if you knew a horrific beating would follow.

Have you seen the I Spit On Your Grave movies? Same scenario. Then get revenge after the law can't or doesn't help.

Maybe after the beat down he learned his lesson. What do you think? I wish that we would have gotten to see the bodyguards faces when they found Andrew. I Spit On Your Grave? Is that a movie?

reply

b73142,

Probably not learned his lesson. I wish she was able to beat the bodyguards up as well, however inside a hotel, she would have gone to jail and it wouldn't made the revenge scene flow, because he held and punched Molly, and the bodyguards raped her. No one knew that and thought it was the Rock Star only. He still deserved the beating. IMO

Too bad, there wasn't a sequel with Nomi(sp) going to LA and what craziness would have happened. The actress who played Penny in Showgirls has her own movie, Penny From Heaven, and it's not good at all. I saw it a few years ago, either on YouTube or DailyMotion.

Yes. I Spit On Your Grave, is a movie. The original 1978, a remake and two or three other movies. You can watch the films on YouTube.com and I think, Hulu.com has the remake and the sequels. DailyMotion.com may have the movies as well, but use as a last resort. The site is safe, I just prefer YouTube and Hulu better. Never click on links to watch a movie.

If you have ShowTime or TMC, I think they have the movie available or OnDemand.

Don't pay to watch the movie on YouTube or Hulu. Just keep searching YouTube.com and someone should have it uploaded for free. The quality maybe poor, but atlease you didn't waste your money. Another YouTube and DailyMotion viewing tip is if it has a low number of views, then it's not the movie and they want you to follow the link to watch the movie. Don't do it. You will get a virus or something else will happen to your computer.

So, unless you can watch the movie inside of the YouTube website/screen, no clicking links. 😊

Andrew deserved it the most because he set up Molly's rape. Like I said, I don't like this movie, but I like Molly and Nomi's friendship. I had a discussion with someone and in not so many words they said that Molly asked for it because her dress was short and she flirted with him. I told them that many people sleep with their celebrity crush and don't get raped.

reply

b73142,

They all deserved the beating. I see and agree with your point about Andrew.

I loved their friendship as well.

No one deserves to be rape. It doesn't matter the way they are dressed, flirting, drunk or passed out. It makes the man or a woman a coward because he or she knows he or she can't resist if they are passed out or punched in the face.

Your right about sleeping with celebrity crush or real world crush. Many people do and some after cry rape, because they didn't get the attention that they thought that they deserved, which is also wrong. You have to be careful in all situations. Sad, but true. 😰 😟

Happy Sunglasses Day 😎

Couldn't Nomi have stayed in town until Molly got out of the hospital? Molly was in very bad shape and they were very close friends.

reply

Nomi couldn't stay in town. Once she destroyed Andrew's career by turning his face into hamburger she no longer had the protection provided to her. She had to get out before they came after her or called the police.

reply

Horrible scene in every sense

reply

One of the reviewers online claimed that in addition to it of course being horrifying and whatnot, the scene was also meant to be a metaphor for the dark and victimizing sides of the American sex industry in and of itself.

reply

The film was far too dumb, funny and exploitative to concern itself with making comments on the ‘sex industry’, the rape ruins the unintentional hilarity of the film.

reply

In that regard, many viewers probably also felt that it also practically came out of nowhere and was out of touch thematically and tonally with the rest of the picture.

reply

But then again, if we all knew who Paul Verhoeven is, and that this Dutch director, both in Hollywood later and in previous years in Holland, has practically made a career out of being a provocative filmmaker, with themes and often strong and explicit scenes of sex, violence, sexual violence etc often dominating his pictures, it may not have been TOO shocking and surprising to also see that scene in Showgirls. Then again, maybe at the time, not many people expected a male on male rape scene in his "Spetters" (1980) which at times felt was being a youth drama about motorcyclists pursuing their dreams.

reply

Verhoeven - always blindsides you with a surprise rape when you least expect it. Crazy dog.

reply

That is, perhaps true, but then again, if you see most of his movies, you will realize he is quite a provocative director and strong scenes of violence etc are also very much present in his pictures. Think of all the gory stuff you also see in the likes of Total Recall, Starship Troopers, Robocop etc.

reply

Yeah but those films are tonally consistent and full of extreme content all the way through. Showgirls is a trashy, exploitative, smutty laugh riot and then suddenly the most sympathetic character gets violently raped and the laughs stop.

reply

Yeah, its sort of true, horrible feeling of tragedy begins.

reply

I feel like a rape scene would have been more appropriate for another 1995 Vegas-set film that had an NC-17 vibe i.e. Martin Scorsese's Casino; especially since Sharon Stone's character was far from sympathetic.

reply

So you think Casino would be improved with a scene in which Ginger gets raped? By who?

reply

In a way, yes, because there are unfortunately too many people who think that Casino glorifies crime (despite the truly horrific cornfield scene).

Ginger could have been gang-raped by some of the hitmen who we see in the final reel.

reply

So, it sounds like in your heart, you have this fantasy of Sharon Stone being gang raped and you would love to watch something like that, right?? Please seek therapy

reply

The whole point of Molly's rape is that the sex industry isn't a victimless crime.

Nomi works in an industry catering to sexual predators, not just horny guys. The celebrity felt it was okay to rape Molly because he saw her as being "in the industry" and therefore assumed the worst when she approached him.

Also, Molly's rape was a turning point for Nomi and her aspirations of being a showgirl. When she tried turning to Kyle MacLachlan character's help after the rape, he refused to, showing that no matter how high up on the ladder a showgirl gets, she will always be second class to the men running the industry. That's when she decided to quit the biz.

reply

If the rape scene wasn't in the movie I wonder if it could have got an R instead of NC -17.

reply

The rape scene didn't make any sense. I can't recall any reason the casino's star singer would have his goons savagely beat and rape Molly (unless I missed the reason).

If they needed a rape scene to piss off Nomi, why not just have the singer force himself on Molly?
