One quick look . . .

Watched this with the wife last night, courtesy of YouTube. No offense to actor John Shea, but I took one look at the guy and said "I don't like the looks of him - betcha he's the villain."

And a tip 'o the derby to Tiffany Taubman, who did a first-rate job in playing the abused daughter. I often marvel at how these young children could put on such believable performances.

I suspect the director had a hand, as I remember "Close Encounters" with that great refrigerator scene where the little boy intently watches the off screen alien and suddenly breaks out in a big smile. Spielberg had a clown pop up from behind some scenery. Great stuff.

I still remember watching this with my mother on ABC ha! Then lifetime picked it up. Such a dark movie.

I found this on Feeln. It's a streaming channel. I agree right away one look at the husband and it's a dead give away he's no good.

I think it was a gorilla suit that got the kid smiling in Close Encounters.

You are right. From TCM: "In the scene where the boy looks into the kitchen, Spielberg had a make-up man in a gorilla suit on one side of the set. The boy's expression revealed a certain alarm when he saw it, then a partition on the other side was dropped, revealing Spielberg in a bunny suit, making the boy smile but still wary of the gorilla. The make-up man took off the gorilla mask and Guffey, seeing his friend there, began to laugh."

Spielberg in a bunny suit? That would have made me laugh as well.😀
