What if Mills hadn’t of killed Doe?

John Doe meticulously orchestrated the first five murders, the sixth was his own sin of Envy, but how could he have been sure that Mills would kill him? It seems like rather a big gamble that his whole prophecy and "masterpiece" could have all failed with the final murder had Mills been strong enough not to kill Doe. It seemed for a moment there that he wasn't going to.

Then he would fail. It was a gamble afterall.
