Marquis de ... Shadey?
So apparently, based on how Brad Pitt mispronounces his surname, not everyone in America in the 1990s knew who he was or how Marquis De Sade's name is REALLY pronounced?

shareHi TheMan:)
Im certain not everyone knows how to pronounce the name even to this day, no matter where they are from
That line was there to key the audience into the fact that he was a bit of a hot headed, foolish goon and it fit pretty well with how the character was written
Pitt played the part so well...the tough maniac guy who leads with his chin and fails to think ahead
I thought it was perfect and Pitt was just great
And you would be wrong for one simple reason.
I guess youโre not familiar with the singer, SADE...who pronounces her name...Sha-day?

Pitt's character was supposed to be unread and not much of a thinker.
shareI'm pretty sure it's supposed to be a reference to Sade, the British singer popular in the 80s.
shareUh, yes, it could be, but then I always used to pronouce, and it is actually a BAND by the way, their name as "Say-d", dunno why really, but yes they are called "Sha-dey", but it never really struck me that THIS is where Mills got an idea of how to pronounce Marquis de Sade's last name in the movie.

Well, actually, it was a band (it had at least 4 other members in it) who was fronted by a female singer, whose first name was Sade, and yes I know that "Sha-day" is how their (and her first) name is pronounced.
Although few people know or care about this example for instance, but the Russian pop group Glukoza is actually a band as well, but most people in Russia think it is just one silly lady singer with one-word name it is.
Too bad the film meant to be a sequel sucked.

Actually, the band was named after the singer. It's somewhat comparable to the German band Nena. To me the reference has always been pretty obvious. I'm also quite sure most Americans have no clue who the Marquis de Sade was. You don't have to be cultured to be a detective.
