Mills story about cop who was shot

for some reason I always wondered if it was untrue , the way somerset looks at him and the way Mills cant remember his name

I think Somerset looked at Mills in that way because he was in disbelief that he could forget the name of a man he killed. That sort of thing would have been monumental to Somerset.

reply

@faye-ashley Yes, I thought Somerset looked saddened by Mills not remembering the name of someone that he had actually killed.

Wasn't it the cops name that he was trying to remember? I understood that a cop was shot and died in the ambulance, which I thought was odd as he was hit in the arm, must have hit an artery.

My theory:

Somerset has seen A LOT.

That includes his share of "rookie" detectives

But Mills: He IS the box at the end of the movie, to Somerset.

The dreadful thing is that as they get to know each other, Somerset opens box within box of Mills, never wanting to in the first place.

All that vulnerability, around Mills ( his refusal to see anything as complex) , loved by Mills (Tracey,
their dogs, their home); in Mills (he BLOCKED out the fellow officer's name--remembering the name lets in the absurd possibility of Mills facing mortality) is terrifying to Somerset.

Somerset thought he had moved past terror.

Have to say this movie is so precise at reaching the dark places.
