CONFUSED

Ok you know joe and his friend( some officer forgot the name)... remember how joe leaves the bunker to the NEB base and tells his friend ( the officer) to stay back and take over the bunker.... well was he a screamer the whole time or was it when the other type screamers infilitrated the bunker later on in the movie???? makes you wonder... becuase in the end at the emergency escape ship when joe sees his friend ( who is fighting him now) , his friend recites one of joes quotes about his wife and the bar and what not ( joe says this right before the plane crashes next to the bunker when their in the bar) ...

Remember, this is based on a Philip K. Dick story, and Dick was famous for his ideas about paranoia. So it's entirely possible that everything that happened at Alliance base, both audio and video, was recorded and stored somewhere. After ten years of this, everyone at the base was comfortable enough with the constant surveylance that they just took it for granted and paid it no mind, acting and speaking normally about their lives, hopes, disappointments, etc. Once the Screamers entered the base, they access to those tapes and used them for their own purposes.

It is such a shame that this film introduced completely human-seeming Screamers: boring as we see this so often.

You guys need to rewatch the movie and pay attention to detail a little more, not to harp on you or anything.

When Joe and Jefferson set camp for the night (when they light a fire), Joe radios back his bunker for a regular radio check. Chuck then tells Joe that they got a new arrival, a little boy. He says, "It's a little strange, but it seems okay." This transmission is heavy with static, so it's hard to hear well.

But watch it again!

That's right, but we don't know for certain whether that communication indicated the actual arrival of a David or was just a ruse for Hendricksson's benefit. It's already well established (by e.g. the message from "Secretary Green") that the Screamers are perfectly capable of faking this stuff and communications can't be safely relied on.

I think it was probably real and (as suggested earlier in this thread and elsewhere) Screamer Chuck probably knew about the Point Reyes conversation because the Screamers monitored/recorded the conversation. But it's also possible that Chuck was a Screamer all along and deliberately gave misinformation to Hendricksson. (The main reason I think it's unlikely is that it's not obvious why the Screamers would want Hendricksson to have any warning that a David had infiltrated the Alliance bunker. But it's possible.)

Considering that in the last part he was talking of the machines ripping off people's faces, I believe his friend was simply "replaced" taking the original skin and putting it on a robot. As for how he knows what he said outside the bunker, the idea that screamers were monitoring them is likely enough although I have to say, it makes people wonder. I don't think there is a definite answer wether the friend Chuck has been an android all along or just in the end but most of the hints make you suppose that his skin was used only when the base was "invaded" by the David model or whatever the robot-kid was called.

reply

I think that's most likely as well. But I also agree that the movie doesn't give us a 100% definite answer.

Neither explanation really works, because neither explains Chuck's failure to recognise Don Giovanni as an opera, rather than as the name of a soldier.

(1) Assuming Chuck is real at the beginning of the movie: The real Chuck knows "Don Giovanni" is an opera because Joe tells him so inside the bunker, where presumably the Screamers can't hear them (and even if all conversations are recorded and the Screamers have access to the recordings, this one is hard to make out because there's loud music playing). The Point Reyes conversation takes place outside the bunker, where the Screamers are able to monitor them. So the Screamers don't know what "Don Giovanni" is. What's the problem?

(2) Assuming (which is think is far, far less likely/plausible) that Chuck is already a Screamer at the outset: There's no reason to assume that every single Screamer knows every single thing that every single other Screamer knows. The Chuck who doesn't recognize the name of the opera may not be the one who (heh) "faces off" against Joe at the end but some other Screamer using Chuck's voice. Again, what's the problem?

Chuck is not a screamer; he is replaced by the other screamer with the tear drops tattooed under his left eye.

Attention to detail.
