So... what if they made a new Scarlet Letter movie?

I'm reading this book in AP Literature and it's really got me thinking. I find that besides the tedious and wordy language, the plot is very good, quite perfect for a movie without having to actually MODERNIZE it. (Maybe a LITTLE adaptation.) It's a dark story about a sick sadistic psychopath trying to get back at his significant other for cheating on him while he was away, by using ninja mindbend torture skills on someone he suspects to be her lover. Isn't that just perfect Hollywood material? I call a remake!

I haven't seen this movie but from the reviews and ratings I can assume it wasn't that great... so what if they made a GOOD Scarlet Letter movie that does the novel justice, say, in the next few years? What would it be like? How would you change it? Who would you cast? For me I'd make Chillingworth (my fav character) the center, shed some more light on his story and the background between his and and Hester's relationship, and show him in a more sympathetic light. I'd make Pearl's role MUCH, MUCH LESS ANNOYING than in the novel. Instead of very nearly mentally challenged, she could be contemplative, intelligent and more mature. Then she could have a major role. Also I'd make the movie in the style of a psychological thriller set in Puritan New England, instead of a historical romantic tragedy (which would be quite dreary to modern audiences).

As for casting, the whole time I was reading the book, Chillingworth very much reminded me of Hans Landa in Inglourious Basterds: intelligent, evil, detective-like, sadistic. Christoph Waltz would be perfect as Chillingworth. Natalie Portman or Keira Knightley come to mind when I think of Hester. Dimmesdale... I don't really know. I think of a pale, fragile yet not feminine looking guy... maybe Jesse Spencer from House. (Who as House fans know is good at acting about inner guilt.) Abigail Breslin or Dakota Fanning (as overused as she is) can be Pearl.
