question about something i just cant figure out

Call me stupid but I wondered if someone could help me out :)
When two ladies found out that Hester had a bath tub they frowned on it and said 'what is she French?" I dont understand why..?

and I completly understand the red bird is symbolic. The bird is what Hester was chasing when she first saw the Reverend. And I think it symbolizes lust, ect. But when they were doing the cutaway scenes during the love scene I figured the slave girl knew what was going on. But what exactly was she doing in the bathtub? It looked like it was supposed to be something more than what I am understanding.

French people are normally regarded as being very liberal when it comes to sexual, or what the colonists view as sexual, subjects or ideas. It's just a saying. Also the idea of taking a bath in that time, in addition to being somewhat inappropriate in their eyes, is very hoity-toity. They think she's being stuck up and... well... slutty. This goes along with when Hester tells her servant not to be afraid of it- that it's not an instrument of Satan.

The girl was masturbating in the tub.

Here's what I want to know about the bathing tub...

How come when Demi Moore takes a bath, the tub is just big enough for her to stand up in, with the water coming up to her ankles, forcing her to stand in it naked, pouring water over her body -

But when the slave girl takes a bath, the tub is big enough for her to submerge her whole body in it?

I suppose I know WHY this happens, I just can't figure out HOW.

Maybe Mituba is alot smaller then Hester?
